Wanted: rotten but road worthy

Post by 105Charlie »

Looking for a cheap Capri, but something on the road. I'm guessing this means it won't exactly be pretty but I'm happy to tidy it up as I go along, I'm no stranger to a welder and a tub of filler.

Would consider a very slight project (tidy rolling shell or something that needs a day's welding for an MOT) if it was pretty close to London.

The cheaper the better!

Don't bother. A cheap Capri that's on the road doesn't exist
Anything that's even capable of going anywhere near a road will be well into four figures.
The phrase "pissing in the wind" springs to mind.

Stick in your price range mate as everyone's opinions of cheap are all different! The cheap ones are still out there, only very few and far between but if you shout a max price I'm sure someone will know if a few!

Good luck in your search, I'm sure you will pick one up and have a ton of fun and enjoyment with it, as I do driving mine. They are a good bunch on here, someone will give you the heads up if they come across one which you may be interested in I'm sure. Ebay might be the best bet for you, cars in all kinds of condition appear on there as you will most likely already know. Although prices do often inflate on there.

Capri Power is another forum you might try (not as friendly as this one), they have a cars for sale section also.

Hope you find one soon, please do post on here when you get one, we are always interested, no matter what the condition. In fact, the worse condition the better, as we can see your progress with it, which will be fascinating.

Stay positive and excited, will be worth it in the end.

Hi,
There are some cars about around £3000 some of which without MOT, you may be lucky.....

Thanks for the warm welcome pbar! Going to sign up to Capri Power now, I've been keeping an eye on ebay but I always find people think what they've got is worth way more than it actually is. I've looked at one off of there and it had two completely shot sills, falling apart as I ran my hand along em - he didn't acknowledge this and refused to budge at all on price since they only 'needed a touch up'

andyd - I know there are some real variations in price, I'm not after anything special though. I guessing I'm probably looking at a 1.6 laser, but I'm fine with that - I doubt whatever engine is in it will stay in there for a long time!

As people have already said, you are going to find it pretty hard going. Also i find the phrase "rotten but road worthy" a bit of an oxymoron, as any Capri thats rotten enough to fit within your budget simply isnt going to be road worthy, at least not in my experience of being in the market myself a couple of years back, and keeping an eye on it since (prices for rust buckets have skyrocketed in just that short amount of time). Heck, its more likely you'll see something that isn't that rotten but still isn't road worthy. The golden age of snapping up a cheap and cheerful Capri and driving it away 100% road legally is mostly long gone, you can still occasionally find one for a reasonable price but it likely wont be road worthy and will require considerable work and money to get it in that state.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Then again thats just my take on things, i could be 100% wrong but i dont think i am.

Saw this and remembered this thread....

If it's the sort of thing you are after? Looks pretty tempting if I had the space!

All the best
