Moulded Carpets for Mk2/3 to buy!

Post by NewtonCommercial »

Hi Guys,

We at Newton Commercial are seriously thinking of making moulded carpets for the Mk2/3 Capri. We would like to make a one piece for the 1.8 and possible a 2 piece for the 2.8i/Ghia. Essentially it would mean a moulded grey carpet, which is very close to the original and fits like a glove.

Firstly is this something that you guys want?

If you have not heard of Newton we have recently manufactured carpets for the Escort in original loop carpet and make lots of others for Minis, Golfs etc in the UK.

http://www.newtoncomm.co.uk/cars/ford-e ... t-mk1-mk2/

Drop me some love/advice if this is could work!

Cheers

Hi Jonny,
It's good to see companies investing time and money into manufacturing parts for the Capri.
I think they could sell well, depending on price and quality. One minor nit-picking point though....there isn't a 1.8 Capri, but a one piece carpet should be suitable for both the 1.6 and 2.0 cars.

Have you thought about manufacturing a boot carpet? I think that could also sell well.

Good luck with your venture.

Andrew.

I think your best seller would be a good quality 2 piece grey carpet for the later models that had a grey interior and the long centre console. The Ghia models, both MK2 and MK3, also had this console but carpets were fitted in a variety of colours - green, beige, blue, red and brown to name a few.

The one piece was only fitted to L, early GL and S models and a few limited editions based on the base or L model. A black one would sell to owners of S (pre 1982) models. On the L and GL models it too was available in a variety of colours - but I've never seen a one piece in grey!

My experience of the O/E grey carpet is that some stains can be difficult to completely remove so those wanting an immaculate car would be interested in replacements. Andrew's idea about the boot carpet is a good one too; the one in my Laser model is horrible.

I see from your website you are a general car trimmers. I think if you could remake the seat covers for certain models as well you would have a good business. I would be very interested if you could make the various "Carla" and "Savannah Black" for the earlier S models and I'm sure a lot of the 2.8i owners would be contacting you too.

We all would welcome anyone remanufacturing quality but affordable parts for our cars.

Hi,
I bow to Paul's superior knowledge, as I didn't realise that the Laser models had the long centre console.

On the subject of the boot carpet, the problem with the original boot carpet for the 2.8 models is that the carpet itself is the same size as for the other models. Unfortunately, the raised boot floor of the 2.8 does not cover the full width of the boot at the rear, and as the carpet follows the contours of the varying levels, it makes the carpet too narrow to cover the bottom of the side trims.
I would love to make some sections out of MDF to fill the void and make the complete boot floor level, but this would require the carpet to be wider than the original to fully cover them.
A boot carpet in the original colour with a deep pile and bound at the edges, like the original item, could be a good seller.

Andrew.

I hope this conversation keeps going Jonny
As this forum represents a cross section of Capri owners its fair to say anything that is developed on the basis of what is suggested and agreed by forum members should also sell via Ebay etc. Just a thought but have you approached CCI with a view of selling through them or do you prefer direct contact with customers.

You certainly seem to do some good stuff on that website. I am interested in a couple of things. Any discount for Laser Page members? (You don't get if you don't ask!)

Please advertise and sell direct to Capri owners as well as CCi do tend to add a lot of CCi tax to the price of them which may put off those who otherwise would have bought a new carpet.

Another item that I think would sell well, especially to owners of Capri's with a grey interior is a moulded carpet Dash Mat similar to the ones you can buy freely in America for just about any car or truck. This would cover just the top of the dash & help prevent cracking, or just cover an already cracked one. Other Dash colours also available.. ;)

I spoke with CCI early this year and they were not that interested when i sent them a sample of the carpet we had in stock. They said it had to be an exact match. So we have been looking and we may get a closer match to the original carpet, but with different colours and loop and velour carpet options across the range, its not commercially viable to get different carpet made. Its what is available out there, too keep costs down.

We will look at the boot carpet and dash to see if we can do this too. Ideally i want Capri in Suffolk that we can look at initially. Any members out there from sunny Suffolk?

We tend to use a trader in Europe and we may retail or use another trader such as Aldridge Trimming in the UK to sell these for us.

As PaulG has said, selling direct would be very welcome.

The market for Capris would seem to be:

Full carpet set: 1 piece, 2 piece etc. Mostly dark grey but likely some smaller demand for other colours.

Dashboard top cover (not an original part but would be a good seller as Capri dashboard tops suffer from age. Leather covers are available but expensive and can be fiddly)

Boot carpet: Bound edges, press studs. Standard width + as has been said why not slightly wider for the 2.8 Injection to cater for the contour of the 1" raised spare wheel cover

Rear shelf carpet; Mostly dark grey but likely some smaller demand for other colours. Reproduction blank Capri rear shelf is available but people struggle to get the small carpet sections that look right.

Re trimmed seats and door cards. Recaro seats on 2.8 i and optional on some S model cars tend to be at a premium here. Anyone who could repurpose similar style Recaro front seats that would fit Capri runners, reupholstered in Carla or Shark Grey cloth, half leather etc at a decent price which could also be sold with matching Capri rear seats & door cards. Offering fishnet headrests as an option would also prove extremely popular looking at the value even old ones can change hands at.

Headlining. After market ones are available in light colours but far less options for the dark grey in the 2.8 I cars.

I have just bought one for the Sierra with logo from a chap on FB. He could do them for the Capri if someone can get him a template.....
