ESRT32 Radio Repair

Post by EightyFive »

I have got a problem with my radio head unit, essentially I can't get any sound to the speakers on the drivers side, front or rear.

I believe this to be a problem with the unit itself, as I have tested a modern radio (Albeit bypassing the fader knob) and all four speakers work.

Has anyone had a problem like this before and is it a simple fix? I can solder okay but that's about the extent of my electronics skills. If not is there any repairers that you guys can recommend? Have reached out to several tech/ audio "specialists" now and none seem to want anything to do with it. Never knew a primitive radio from the 80s would be so daunting to some. Very frustrating!

Thanks guys.

Haven't been able to test it on tape. I suspect the tape player has a broken belt as when a tape is inserted nothing happens and then the radio starts playing again. Could these be linked then? Always assumed was a separate issue.

I was just thinking it may be either a fault in the FM decoder (does it have FM???) OR it could be a tape head fault: if either worked it would discount the output amp.. It`s quite possible the affected channel has been shorted out at some time which has destroyed the output chip. Or it could just be a dry joint. I f you can solder, it might be worth just going around where the o/p sockets are soldered to the board and re-soldering the area? Otherwise, there are companies such as this who will undertake repairs: https://www.chromelondon.com/ (just the first that came up on google "vintage radio repairs), there will be others

These people are able to fit new modern workings into an old radio, if that's any help?

Just had a look at Tadpole's site. They are definitely at the top end of the market. A rebuilt Motorola 717T with DAB and Bluetooth comes out at a significant £ 1,902

A standard conversion on a customer supplied radio is less than £500 though. I think that's a reasonable price to pay.
Besides, EightyFive has asked the forum for solutions to fix their their issue and I've responded to that request.

Another example where something`s worth whatever someone else is willing to pay: this working original sold for £400: £500 maybe not that unreasonable after all?

Exactly Steve, there is always someone who will pay over the odds to get whatever they want, that's the reason prices rise. Assuming that's a genuine eBay sale that is.

Hope you're doing ok, must meet up soon.

Paul,
Had a bit of a setback last week, Punto`s head gasket failed (dramatically, without warning) so no show. Actually had to go shopping in Capri while parts were on order!!! I believe my P.A. has been in contact?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, to be honest i’m shelving the idea for now. Quite low down this list of priorities on this project but good to get some ideas.

I’ll be honest that listing is what got me thinking about it. I get people like the idea of originality but £400 for a primitive car radio? Madness to me. I guess it is safe to say the capri is no longer an affordable classic.

Leave the broken one in place and hide a modern one somewhere else!

Yeah I did that before, just would be nice to have it fully functional. Fit quite snugly under the dash.
