Fan belts from Tickover
I have just taken my first delivery from Tickover and the fan belts are branded Gates.
Now I don't have a problem with that , someone has to make them and the quality is good by the look and feel of it.
But ....I am sure it is way too short ... or is it me being a bit slow for want of a better way of putting it...alternator set at absolute minimum and still can't get it anywhere near...must be at least an inch short to get it near the lip of the pulley.
Has anyone else had these belts ...what was your outcome ?
Regards Paul

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
Hi,
Gates are known as a good quality brand.
I wouldn't think for a moment that you've been supplied an incorrect part by Tickover, they know their onions, but what part number is the one you've got?
Don't forget that the belt will appear too small as you have to get it over the lip of the pulley...
Andrew.

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
I had issues when I did mine, there are 2 sizes;
Gates 6219MC 975mm
Gates 6267MC 988mm
Tried them both and went with the 988mm but still a right pain in the a**e and still had to remove alternator

Don't forget the OP has a 2 litre.
Tickover show the 6263MC, which is 865mm, as the belt they supply for the 2.0.
According to the manufacturer's website, that is the correct part.

I just realised I didn't read the post properly
Re: Fan belts from Tickover
that`s the correct size, the Bosch part is even tighter at 864
There must be something wrong if you need to take the alternator off to change the belt, surely, I never have?

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
I can confirm that is the correct size as I have that belt fitted on mine what Tickover did 2 years ago . But wait a question is your engine the original ? Or was your laser originally a 1.6 ?

Same engine though, isn't it? I'm no expert but I would wager that both the 1.6 and 2.0 pinto engines use the same size belts.Jasonmarie wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 4:41 pm But wait a question is your engine the original ? Or was your laser originally a 1.6 ?

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
Correct. The 2.0 block`s a couple of mm taller but doesn`t affect the alternator/water pump.Andrew 2.8i wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 5:06 pm Same engine though, isn't it? I'm no expert but I would wager that both the 1.6 and 2.0 pinto engines use the same size belts.

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
I only ask as I think the 1.6 has a different alternator to the 2.0 one
Here’s a picture with mine , it also shows the right part number .

Can't you all just belt up

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
AFAIK all the Pintos had the same alternator, why wouldn`t they, electrically they`re identical. There were different makes fitted, depending on supply chain, but they would all have the same diameter pulley so they run at the same speed.

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
Why all the interest in the size of David Gates' (or is it Gareth's?) belt anyway?
Apologies to anybody who was expecting a sensible contribution to the discussion.

You could have a point perhaps with the lock down the pinto engine has added a few inches

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
Yeah the one I ordered was the 6263MC, and on their site (Tickover) it lists it as being suitable for both 1.6 & 2.0 .
The one currently on is a Quinton Hazel 914.
Might just have to put it on the rack and pre stretch it .
If it still won't go on I may just have to get a slightly longer one if I can't get this one on with a jemmy bar.

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
There`s something weird about this: the one fitted is (in theory) too big at 914mm, 50mm longer than the `correct` part. Although it would only be a 15mm increase in actual diameter. Very strange. Please don`t be offended but you have loosened fully so the alt will push right back, it`s not binding? Other than that, yes, get another 912 from a motor factors.

Re: Fan belts from Tickover
Yeah loosened off completely...It was seized , and snapped a lower collared bolt getting it off, but everything freed off and the alternator taps up against the block quite easily . .
The old belt is quite Knackered ... lost more teeth than Nobby Stiles ...
