Mr B wrote: Tue Mar 09, 2021 10:17 am I take it that your not keen on the Essex V6 then!
Crank broke, camgear failed, lost pushrods, heads flooded with oil with high pressure oil pump.
With tuning camshaft + bettter exhaust gave +15bhb (to 150bhb same as stock 2.8...) and fuel consumption rise to horrible 20l+/100km
I agree with the timing gear being weak but the same design is used on the Cologne V6 as well so that makes it a weak point on both engines.

I have had Essex engined Capris for nearly 30 years and I have not had the issues that you describe, any modification made to an engine has the potential to go wrong if not thought out properly, saying that I have used a high pressure oil pump a few times on a Essex and not had a problem but as the engine was not designed for the HP pump i think its reasonable to expect some issues from time to time.

I have had four 2.8 injections over the years and to be honest I find the engine to be gutless and it definitely has no where near as much torque as the Essex, I found the injection system to be very temperamental as well, which is why I suggested the OP gets an Essex engined Capri instead - granted not as much HP as the Cologne but a lot less hassle and much easier to work on.

Just my opinion.

Get a scale and weight the pistons and compare it to cologne, you get the idea why all rotating mass is is so slow and heavy.
Can't say that cologne desing is best either hotspot in heads and siamese heads won't make it awesome, but still its better.

I runned Kjet like 20 years with turbo maybe 350bhb and 450nm, broke a couple of pistons because lean mixture and wrong ignition advance.
When I got all right worked like a clock. But I got more power hungry and went for EFI and E85 and running 500+/650nm, want to see essex to go like that still street drivable with 3.09 rear axle ratio and can cruise in highway with 5th gear at 2000 rpm at 55mph.

And if you bring GAA to table I will bring westlake and we go to nowhere.... but those engines are pretty much unavaileble everywhere.

Not sure what block is better, atleast essex is heavier, might be more durable if the casting isn't worse?

Atleast I know that OHC/Pinto/cosworth block manage won't much more power for block. Blocks will crack at 750whp, even the burton alloy block.
Coswrth 24v block is better than those but the inlet manifold isn't great... I have seen 24V cosworth 2.9 run with 900whp and dynoed 1124bhb, and then broke a crank at 7600rpm.

My suggestion would be to get a 2.8 if you`ve never had one, then you can say you`ve tried both?

Aye caprikid , 6-7 years ago we bought a new to us car and we had a choice of either a 2.4l ( which was already big for the car ), or a 3.5l v6 which was just stupidly big ....like nearly 300hp in a corolla , so we went for the 2.4l , spent the next 6 years thinkin about the 3.5l , and when I wrote off the 2.4l we bought the 3.5l version .......just get a good v6 coz if you dont you will never know ,hell if you dont like it peeps will be queing up to buy it so nothing lost . Getting the "big" version of something always gives you a bit of a lift when you give it the message .....bucket list thing ......you wont get many more chances 😀

:xd: it was getting silly, "this is the better engine if it was modified to be totally different, except when it wasn't and then this other type was better, except when it broke."

Simples....pinto everyday and twice on tuesdays. Much more potential and much simpler to understand. Every major job on the cologne is hassle.
What size and what mods you make? Loads of variation so you can have fun playing.

I've had both and I'd go with pinto too - lighter, therefore handles better, simpler and easier to work on, cheaper to mend. And If you want more power the modifications are more plentiful and considerably easier to implement. And in stock form theyre MUCH better on fuel.

Ive had both - and would recommend both. Drive examples of both and see what you think.

I had a 4 cylinder Capri in the 80s from when it was only about 3 years old and was very happy with it til it got damaged in a towing accident. I'd always wondered what the 2.8 was like and ended up buying an Injection Special a couple of years later. I didnt find it as different as Id expected but I wasnt disappointed either. The extra torque made it very civilised as the V6 could burble along without needing to change gears so often. When it came to looking for a Capri more recently I ended up with a 2.8i again but would have been just as happy had the right 4 cylinder car come up.

Neither engine is expensive or difficult to get parts for or at all difficult to work on. Ive rebuilt a couple of Pinto engines in my time, part rebuilt a 3 litre Essex, not had a 2.8 Cologne apart but they really dont look at all difficult. The mechanical fuel injection does its job and if mine ever gives serious trouble Il probably swap it for an EFI setup or a modern standaone fuel injection setup such as a Holley Sniper.

Hi Guys , I have decided to stick with the 2 litre pinto as I am just so used to them . Thanks for all the advice on here , for those who think I should go for the V6 as I might never get another chance I see where you are coming from lol . I guess though I might try and get a shot of one and if I really like it I could sell the 2 litre and go looking again.

I have been surprised how hard it is to find a nice capri for around 7 too 10 grand! Especially a rosso red laser they seem to be getting pretty scarce. I have also found that most of the capries have still been advertised even though they were sold long ago ! This is going to a lot harder than I first thought . Alex

I guess it depends on luck maybe , I mean if you decide to go hunting for a pinto ( as you have ) you will probly now come across V6 capris . I know I would still take the right V6 (condition ,money , an all that ) if I tripped over it , be patient ,hang out for a goodie .🙂🦆
