A photo would help tbh, but as I recall, the Mk2 used different mounting points: I think they simply put plastic captive nuts into a folded up piece of the skin.
The Mk3 had two extra brackets welded on to mount the grille.

Now, from previous experience, many moons ago I bought a Hella grille that had square driving lights mounted within a custom grille. This screwed into the original top mounting points, but to make it fit the bottom I had to chisel off the original welded brackets so it would sit flat, then self-tapper down into the horizontal surface.
Worth looking to see if there's any signs of those brackets being removed? A lot of Capris had those custom grilles back in the day.

Or failing that, it may simply be that someone has previously had a Mk2 grille fitted, and moved the anchor nuts to suit that?
