Just in case anyone`s ever considering doing their own clutch I offer you the Draper transmission wheeley thing. Features a wide tiltable saddle with ratchet strap if needed, it takes all the wrestling out of removing/replacing the gearbox. You do need to raise the car a bit higher (20") but the ease with which you can just slide, lower and roll out. Wish I`d had one years ago.

decided while box was out, might as well change synchro rings, bearings and seals so should be like new

Great review, Steve.
I can see how a combined transmission jack and trolley would make light work of a job that can be difficult, particularly if you are working alone.
Your gearbox looks as good as new, have you painted the casing?

Yep, it`s a spare one, I`ve changed the seals and given it a coat of paint. I know a spare sounds a bit OCD, but they can fail & some of the parts are no longer available. It`s low mileage, really good nick, got it for a very reasonable price from Caprigear.

(Mine`s still a work in progress - but I`ve gone for the same colour scheme :D )

As I have to work on my own (Billy no mates!) I use 2 trolley Jack's, 1 on the flat part of the bell housing and 1 on the casing where the gearbox mountain attaches, with the mountain removed the casing mountain point sits nice and snug into the trolley jack cup, you also have the benefit of being able to adjust the jacks independently to get those all important angles right, the only downside is if the ground your working on isn't quite smooth the trolley jack wheels can snag and judder.

Did anyone else drill and tap a hole for a drain plug . I put mine in the middle of the circular magnet.
I thought you could still get all the parts ๐Ÿค”

Hi Mc,

I'm lucky as the Type 5 box has a drain plug, I have heard of a few people who have done exactly what you just described on the Type 9 box

Beauty of the good ole pinto is it's so much easier to whip the engine out to change the clutch.

Ha ,I thought it was but its been a while since I saw mine ( which has been sounding like a concrete mixer for a surprisingly long time.) and not being one to argue pointlessly :whistle: ......

Don't forget the Burton postage prices - double the order cost, increase it by your age and add the number you first thought of.

That's a relief!
When I saw 'pbar' in the replies I immediately thought, here we go, he's going to ask someone to crawl under their car again to check a gearbox number or something. :poke: :xd:
