Spraying interior plastics "Ghia Brown"

Post by CapriFreak »

Slowly changing my Capri's interior back to its Ghia status but, i'm missing a few brown plastic parts and thinking of spraying the 2.8 shark grey stuff i already have. Anyone done this with a brown interior before? I'm thinking of spraying the centre console (dont really want to do this), the kick panels and pillar trims. Any advice one what spray paint to use for this if i cant find anything?
I feel it might get expensive to buy all these parts again in brown and this might be my only option as i've never seen a brown centre console, except for this picture.

Halfords do a vinyl spray paint (HFVP) in grey, black and red, but not sure they do a brown one?

It's very good for interior trim.

Maybe ebay??

I've eyed up the red one before and thought it could possibly make a brown effect as it's not really very 'red' in my opinion so that may be worth a shot, alternatively Nick posted this when I asked last year but I should say I haven't got round to trying any of them yet! Too busy fixing them to stay on the road in the first place

Hi Danny. Been having a look to see if there is anything similar to HFVP and came across this stuff. Its more of a dye than a paint and is for car interiors. Its 'dark brown but maybe if applied in very light coats you can get it to colour match your interior. But having not used this paibt not sure how easy it is to apply with some control. Anyway here is a link...

Also found this stuff too mate and for 99p might be worth a punt just buying some to test it on a hidden area

Plastikote do a range of paint too. In this link scroll down and they do a Matt Chocolate Finish.

Hope this helps

All the best

I think Plasticote will mix to match a sample so you get the right colour. I've been following a chap on you-tube (Pete C) who is restoring a MK3 Cortina and they mixed it up for him.

My Blue 81 Ghia has the brown plastics. I got a new parcel shelf from CCI & I'm pretty sure it was the vinyl dye I used. When I get home tonight, I'll check as I'm sure I have a tin of it left, £10 a can but it did work well.

IIRC I put 3 thin coats on & it covered very well. When we did the resto on the car, it looked a little too shiny so I dulled it down with a fine scotch bright pad, quick wipe over & it took the edge of the shininess a treat. I have a couple of photos but too large to post. Let me know your e-mail address & I can forward them to you if you want.

Great info! i thought there would be a dye or something i could use. The more i think of it the more plastic parts i think need a colour change! I'll message you my email

Will message Pete C on youtube. Met him recently, the work on his Cortina is exceptional.

I have some Brown interior parts from the 3 litre Ghia that I broke earlier this year
Kick strips
Glove box
Lower Dash parts
Some centre console bits
Front and rear cards.
There will be other bits, I'm starting a massive clearout and some stuff hasn't been touched in over 20 years.

I'll e-mail you the pics shortly.

Have to say if Martin has any or all of the items in stock, will be much the best way to go, get them off him while you can.

You can always paint any bits you cant get hold of in Brown, you will have far less to paint / dye for anything he doesn't have, the tins of the dye are only small so as good as it is, it wont be cheap ;)

Hi Martin, was going to call you about half shaft bearings... would be interested to hear about the rest of the brown plastic part, probably the way to go rather thank dying everything.

My crapi is silver with brown trim ,carpet, hood lining ......and tartan friggin seats and I hate it ,my mother made me wear brown shoes to school when all the cool kids with nice mother's ( everyone but me ) had black shoes. Scarred me for life ,she made shit porridge too .
I got a brown leather recliner lounge suite but only coz it was free ( and 50 years later )
But any how ,I "fixed " the brown boot liners by sanding and fibreglassing the back side to repair cracks and broken screw holes , I then vynil sprayed the things . If your going this way get some prepsol ( special solvent for prepping areas immediately before painting ..... You guys probly call it something else ) ....really does help getting the paint to stick. You can also get car plastic bumper paint ,dunno if it comes in brown tho .

i have a 79 Ghia in Oyster Gold with the "Ghia Brown" interior. I have never seen a brown centre console, mine is black. My dashboard is also black as are the side panels in the boot. Rest of the interior is Ghia Brown.

Had another Ghia in Oyster Gold, that had a beige interior, black centre console, brown dashboard
