Don't laugh, that's not such a silly idea. At least it'll reduce the build up.
You can also put something under the carpet to hold it up, so it drains instead of soaking in.
Short term prevention of further damage until you can locate the leak.

I never got a chance to investigate this to be honest - but it was only the one time it was ever wet, used the car for another week or two and it was never wet again so I have no idea what the hell it was! Need to take it out and do it really but just haven't had the time yet!
