Nut, Bolt & Screw Sizes

Post by Cosmicbike »

I 've yet to find a definitive list, so perhaps if you feel inclined to add details?

Headlight retaining rings: No.8 x 3/8" Pozi Pan head, black.

Headlight backplate to body: No.10 x 1" Pozi pan head, black.

Headlight trims to backplate: No.10 x 1" Pozi pan head, black.

Long thin plastic trims below front bumper to valance: No.10 x 1" Pozi pan head, black.

Will add more as I take it apart...

These are what I noted years ago and are correct to the best of my knowledge:
TCA pivot bolt 3/8" UNF
TCA ball joint 7/16" UNF
steering arm/hub 3/8" UNF
Track rod end ball joint = M10 fine (1.0mm pitch)
ARB brackets/Xmember = M10
steering coupling pinch bolts = M8 10.9 grade HT
Rear spring `U` bolt - M12
Rear spring front bush = 7/16" UNC
Rear spring rear shackle 5/16" (I THINK was actually a Whitworth nut (it was 1968) as they were bigger across flats than UNC, but 5/16 UNC and WW are effectively identical threadwise, so they are interchangeable)

On mine the strip that goes across the upper front valance is held on by black M5's, the same as the grille.

By M5 you mean bolts rather than self tappers? They were definitely originally black pozi`s, as were the grill fixings, bezels etc. Not that it really matters.

Yes, I'd describe them as black pan-headed M5 screws.

Here's some on ebay ;-

Paul,
You know, you`re absolutely right. I`d have said self-tappers till I saw the pics. Shows how your memory plays tricks.

Does anybody know the thread size of the bolts that hold the tailgate to the hinges?
I think they're probably imperial.

Andrew,
I would have thought that as the Mk2 had more German input and was a later design they were more likely to be metric, as most later bits are? M8 off the top of my head, If you get no answer by tomorrow I`ll check for you.

Thinking about it, if the bolt head has 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 on it it`s metric, I think R or S denote HT imperial?

Andrew,
again my memory failed me (though to be fair I`ve never had to undo before) they are pan headed M6 allen bolts and you`ll need a 4mm key - plus an extension, they`re incredibly tight!!!

Thank you Steve, that's very helpful.
You didn't go to the trouble of undoing one of yours did you, just to answer the question? If so, that's incredibly kind!

The tailgate bolts are M6, later ones were torx headed.

Thanks Martin. That's interesting as I have noticed they are torx headed on John's '84 Special, but Steve appears to have allen headed bolts on his '84 Laser. I would assume, therefore, that the changeover was some time in '84?

Mine was manufactured May `84 if that helps.

EDIT: just checked and they are actually Torx head, just happens that a 4mm allen key is a really snug fit and I didn`t have my reading glasses.
