Concerning gearbox noise

In the last week I've noticed a concerning loud whine in second gear. It only occurs under high load (for example going up a long hill). Going to check the oil level and top up if required, but is there anything else that can be checked?

Need MajorTom to chip in here - he's destroyed a number of gearboxes so will probably know best!

Not Capri related, but in my SD1 3.5 Rover V8 gearbox the same happened and my mechanic was adamant that it was the main shaft that was on its way out, due to hammering from the 3.9 stage 2 Range Rover engine fitted...but don’t take my word for it.

Unrelated#2
Many moons ago a rally driving friend gave me a complete set of brand new ( still in the ford packets) innards for my MK2 escort gearbox. After assy and fitting it was time to test it out and a bit of "rally drivin" in the local forest saw me wringing its neck up a long hill in 2nd and it started making noises as you describe ....it was about then I realised that in my haste to get sideways in the gravel I had forgotten to put any oil in it. :swear: :banghead:

A top up of oil sorted this! Perhaps understandable given it's a very long and steep hill!
