Hi,
Most of the dash illumination, the fog lights and also the number plate lights are on fuse 2 (second closest to the bulkhead). From what you say, it sounds like that might be a good place to start looking.
Have a look at this page for more info:

I’m thinking of changing the dash, whilst on it Does anyone know what type/code the dash bulbs are, and if there are brighter, LED replacements?
If so where can we get them?

Are there replacement circuit boards available too, I suppose it’s best to change that too?

Cheers

Hi,
You will need 504 3W capless bulbs, like these:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-504-Cap ... SwZVlXrcFb

Yes, LED equivalents are also available, you'll need the same size and they have the benefit of being brighter as you'll be able to fit 10W LEDs.
Have a read of this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=47405&hilit=improve+dim+dash

New repro printed circuits are available. I'll try and find a link for you, but from memory I think they are about £90.

LEDs work good ,the dimmer doesn't work with them fitted , they are polarity sensitive, and you can get different colours ( I went for blue )

If you get the 3W type which Andrew linked to but get blue tinted ones, you can then remove the old bulb covers which you may still have on. The light will be brighter then but still retain the original look, with the bonus that the dimmer still works as normal.

I also lined the inside of my dash with aluminium foil tape to act as a reflector ,but I'm not sure how much difference it really made as the LEDs are much better by themselves :)

Hi , has anyone got a link to the 3w ( or 5w) dash light bulbs I am looking for green as I guess the originals were green?
The ones I have seen on eBay are just white wedge bulbs and my dash pod bulbs have red plastic backing to them.

Cheers
Stu

Hi Stu,

The red plastic things are the bulb holders. Just pull out the old bulbs from the holders and push in the new ones.

I cannot remember if the original dash light was green. Someone changed mine for blue so am not sure..we’re they green?
I wanna get them pretty quickly, so I’ll look out for these somewhere in the UK ...
cheers

It would be good if you find a supply of these in the UK, I spent ages searching a while ago and that Chinese seller was the only source of 3W green bulbs. There are plenty of sellers of 5W bulbs though.
The dash bulbs would have been clear originally, the light emitted was coloured by the little plastic caps on the inside of the dash. If they haven't been removed already I would do so and get coloured bulbs instead. The chances are that the caps have almost gone opaque with age, and that won't help your aim of getting brighter instrument lighting!

Blue , I think , and they tend to crumble and disintegrate over time, heat from the bulb didn't help , so there may only be remains left. Remembering that the dash lite dimmer will no longer work you might want to think about just how bright you want the dash to be . Over bright gets real hard on the eyes during a long night drive . I'm pretty sure :? that I fitted 5w LEDs and I think they are about right .

Mmmmm I wonder if the original look was green or blue then, I realise the covers may deteriorate over time. So it would be good if I could just have that confirmation...

THe `effect` was to give a green light: the 3w bulbs give quite a yellowish light, through a pale blue filter, yellow + blue = green. Richard of York and all that :D

Ahhhh I see! Thanks for that clarity Steve.
I’ve ordered the green ones, with the assumption that I will remove the covers, to get the original effect....
Just hope they don’t get lost at sea...

No. From memory you'll need a T5 wedge like these:
