Capri 2.8 mystery

Post by 80s-new-man »

hi, I just got a 2.8i

Hi , I’m new...
I have just got my capri 2.8i
I’m not quite sure why, but my 2.8 engine EYxxxxx (build date 12/84) registered 02/85...seems to have spec of an earlier 2.8 as it has non-colour coded grille/lights, cloth recaros, non-leather gear knob and steering wheel. It’s odd someone would do that , I suppose if the seats were so bad they changed them but why the rest?
Trim code is Q5 which I’m not sure is leather and cloth, axle “L” which may be LSD ? Not sure though, maybe someone can advise?

Does anyone know if ford carried on the 2.8 alongside the 2.8 special for a couple of months? I checked inside the rear seats. No build sheet...shock horror.

Any info greatly appreciated on my vin ...I tried that polish site and it’s rubbish. Cheers
Stu

Cheers

Hi Stu,
There's a Czech site that is useful for reference (Google translate will be of use for this site):
http://capri.fordever.cz/Tipy/tipy_cz.htm#v%C3%BDroba
If you scroll down it tells you that the L in the axle configuration box refers to the final drive ratio - in this case 3.091:1. As you probably know, that will be the same whether you have an LSD or not.
The trim code Q refers to steel grey from 1983 onwards. Hopefully somebody with a Special can confirm what the trim code on their VIN plate is.
I hope that helps!

Andrew.

Are you looking to swap your grey cloth interior for a half leather from a Special ? I wondered when someone would turn up who had... :)

My 1983 2.8i should have the grey cloth interior but at some point in it's past has acquired a half leather interior from a 2.8i Special. Its never been a burning issue but I'd quite like to swap interiors with someone to return the car another step closer to it's original spec.

My half leather interior is not worn, torn or scuffed and Id look to swap it for a cloth interior in equally good shape. The doorcards have been cut for slightly larger than standard speakers but i would throw in the speakers so that this wouldnt be a problem for you

What part of the country are you in ?

The mystery continues. When you pulled up outside my house the other day I could swear you had a shark grey interior. A couple of hours and a few coffees later and it had turned into half leather.

The shark grey looks great in my 1983 car and we both now have age appropriate interiors. Excellent result.
