Mk3 Capri - Door shut weatherstrip clips

Postby Daz-RSK » Thu Dec 27, 2018 7:01 pm

Hi People - I seem to be having some difficulty in finding these from anywhere. I haven't started asking classic Ford suppliers or specialist fastener companies just yet. I thought I would just pick your good knowledge on here first please.

So these are a strange little clip. As said, I don't seem to be able to find them anywhere on the 'net.

As the pics show, they slot over the door / sill seam, within the door shut, under the weatherstrip and they have the groove for the inner side of the weatherstrip to sit in. But in combination, they have a cable / loom clamp as well. Quite an intriguing clip and one that does the job it is designed for perfectly.

2 or 3 of mine have rotted a bit and whilst I am trying to sort out the interior, I thought I would replace these. I am sure some of you must have seen these in your own door shuts. Have you ever asked for these before or do any of you know where I can get them from or who would supply them ?

Failing this, do any of you know what the clip is called as I am placing long search items in as I don't have a name and sort of wandering all over the web, without pinpointing what it is ?

Thanks and any help is really appreciated.

I was of the opinion that they are just cable tidy clips and that the door step trims are purely held on by the screws. The rubber door seal is self - gripping and holds the cable tidy clips in place.

I agree with Paul. Can't help on sourcing them but they only hold the cable, the door seal would secure just fine without them.

Thanks for your responses people.

Sorry, I may have been mis-describing myself above. The last picture I posted up shows the clip and as you see it there, the left side is towards the outer side of the car, the right side is towards the interior.

So the left side of the clip in that picture, you can see the narrower pinching point and this goes over the door / sill seam (where the 2 seams are welded together).

The rubber weatherstrip covers this and where the groove that is formed in the centre of that clip is where is where the weatherstrip sits. Then the larger "C" shape or "n" shape in that picture on the right side of the clip holds down the cable. On top of all of this is the plastic trim piece that is screwed down.

The rubber weatherstrip, as you both have said, has its own grippers and doesn't need these. But the weather strip isn't wide enough to straddle the cable or strong enough to retain it in place.

I am just struggling with seeing how I can get any. I have searched on the 'net for a bit and not come through with anything.

Edit - sorry both of you, I see what you both are saying now. Doh! I mis-read your posts. You're not doubting how the clip works - you're both describing that these only have a cable tidy job, not keeping the rubber weatherstrip in place, as that grips by itself. Thank you - that may help me. It's given me another line to look at - cable tidy clips.

Hmmmm.....I am wondering whether these will do the trick. The plastic trim is held down by screws and this could fasten at those screw points. Hmmmmmm

What I like about the Ford clip is its efficiency to multi task. What I don't particularly like is that is does scratch the door / sill seam where it grips to it.

I'll soldier on and maybe will ask trim clip company / Ford classic parts suppliers next week when they are back after the break. But if any of you have any more insightful ideas, really appreciated.

I might be getting somewhere with this, people. :woot:

I have just messaged a chap who sells stuff like this on ebay - not quite identical to this clip, but close - and as he is also a Capri owner, he knows the clip I mean and will contact his supplier in the new year.

Fingers crossed - we may have a source for a stock of new clips for us, if any of you are interested.

I would imagine that if any of you remove the weatherstrip from the door shut, driver or passenger side - or even just lift the bottom edge - you'll be in the same predicament as me, with clips half on, half off, some rusted, some don't grip.

For me personally, I don't want the screws chafing on the loom that sends power down the back, for some of the electrics. I know they are covered by the plastic trim, so shouldn't move. But if Ford placed them there in the 1st place, there must be a reasonably good reason for them being there.

Why don't you just wait until next week then ring Martin at Capri Gear. I bet he's got a pot full of these and it's a case of putting Ford stuff on a Ford car. Apart from being cable tidys, I guess the other reason for these specific clips and where they are located is to stop anyone putting a screw through the wiring cable when fitting the door steps.

Simples really and doesn't need anything to be manufactured or a 2000 word thesis about the whys and wherefores.

I also suggest you brush or spray a little waxoyl on them when fitting to stop them rusting.

Thanks Paul. Yeap - good suggestion with waxoyl and also calling Martin.

I'll give Martin a shout next week.
