That's interesting as CCI state their exhaust (the same system as Sportex) can be fitted to the original downpipes.

I imagine they do fit o/e, and the CCI include the clamps too whereas the others don't...

CCI often get criticised for their prices, but actually, the club system looks like good value for money. Especially with the discount for being a club member.

I'm inclined to agree, I think I ended up buying off ebay though as the only qualm I have with CCI is their postage is a little pricey

Yes, they can all be made to fit and you don't even need a welder. Just a reducer / expander does the trick. Normally slotted and they tell you what the inner / outer diameters for reference.

The only reason the Sportex might insist on having the downpipes - and therefore, you should heed their advice for no other reason - it could be the way the system mates to the downpipes is slightly different where it is positioned, across the width of the car. Pipework is easy to work to lengths - but not quite so easy if the Sportex downpipes are closer or further from the sill than the standard. The rest of the system won't then sit right, even fit at all.

From experience its always worth allowing plenty of time to fit any exhaust and get the car as far off the ground as you can safely and comfortably get it on axle stands to give yourself the best access. Only gently tighten the clamps at first until you are sure that each box and piece of pipe is in the optimum position, then tighten the clamps fully just as you finish.
Also if the exhaust is an after market one, especially if it is a slightly larger bore aftermarket one, then be prepared to test drive and adjust it a couple of times.
Investment in a little bit of time and effort will reward you with an exhaust that wont clang against the bodywork or rear spring.

Yes, that is some good guidance there.

I remember in my "youf", fitting a loud, wider bore to a Cortina and the pipe must have been made by the Chinese. The sections didn't fit (as in the female section was far too wide for the male) and coupled with my "Let's get on with this as quick as I can", after I had fitted the pipe, the damn thing slid round where there was no peg to prevent the rotation - or maybe there was no peg on the Chinese exhaust where there should have been.

The upshot was that I was driving down the road and there was all this scraping sound. I got out and to my horror, part of the exhaust had swiveled on the clamp and was near the ground. I learnt a lot from that day that there is only one way to fit an exhaust - that is the right way.

The trial fit/drive and test as decribed above is also the reason for not using exhaust paste, and fit it dry instead. I've found that the Mikalor clamps are so good (far better than the standard U ones), that paste is not needed anyway.

I've seen those but didn't know what they were called.
Maybe an alternative to Jubilee Clamps too ?

I fitted my exhaust with the usual U clamps but got frustrated at the lack of complete seal and didn't wish to use paste. So I got these which made it far better and as said, didn't have to take the exhaust apart to fit them so was very easy.

you've got the original Ford jubilee clips on yours, haven't you?

On the subject of these t-bolt clamps, which look like a great idea by the way, they also make them in black. In my opinion, that would look better than the stainless ones for anybody that has a black Sportex exhaust. At the moment I've gone for the cheaper option of simply painting regular exhaust clamps black to match the exhaust. I am tempted upgrade to these clamps, but Paul's flow-chart expressly forbids it......

Exhaust has usual clamps so may upgrade these in the Spring if required.

Screwdrivers seem to have that effect on those little bolts in the clamps. I find it easier to use a socket instead and doing it that way doesn't wreck the fastener.

I have a 2" Sportex, fitted by a previous owner, and agree the good balance of sound without being ridiculous.

Only issue I had was the rear rubber mount perishing and rubbing against the NSR tyre. Took a little jiggling into position, will be keeping an eye on. Not sure if that is a fitting issue tho.
