How to remove the rear seat

Post by Paul Domoney »

I have just purchased a 1972 Mk1 Capri GT and one of the first jobs I have to do is to take out the rear seat. The seat itself presents no problem but I am baffled as to how to remove the rear part. I don't suppose I am the first person to come up against this problem.

I cant remember doing this on a Mk1 Capri but on other saloon cars of this era, Mk1 Escorts etc the seat back is usually hung over tabs at the top and secured by screws at the bottom.

After the seat base is removed run your hands along the underside edge of the bottom of the seat back and you should find a 'loop' of wire protruding down from the seat back's frame at either side, with a screw or small bolt holding it in place. On some cars this is actually a flat strip of metal rather than a loop but the principle is just the same. Remove these screws and ensure there aren't any more lurking by pulling the seat back forwards slightly to check it can move freely. Once that's done you now just need to unhook it at the top. Carefully lift the seat back, sometimes this is best by lifting a bit from one side than the other. The seat back will need to be lifted up both side by nearly an inch before it can be lifted clear of its brackets.
