Could be some sealant from the water pump. My galleries were blocked by an over liberal application by a previous owners rebuild.

Ok if you're trimming the bolts then make sure you run them down a suitable nut to ensure the first thread is ok. Otherwise it will interfere with the running torque and give you too low a preload.

No this not an accidental blockage, it is the new and old cylinder head gasket not being cut out for the water galleries. Maybe it is supposed to be like this. Seems strange not to allow the coolant to flow from the block to head next to number 6 cylinder where my problem occurred. Might have a word with gaskets for classics, see what they think. Will do as you suggest re the nut on bolt before I cut. Thanks.

I'd be checking the gasket hasn't been put on the wrong side of the block. Gasket should have the coolant flow holes at the back of the block( ie:#3 and #6 cylinders). Haynes workshop manual page 50 has some good photos on how they should be fitted.

I am looking in to whether 12.9 gradebolts are sufficiently strong.

If so then these look like a starting point.

Stroker is bang on the money, the head gasket was the wrong way round. Haynes diagram confirms it. What a mine of information this forum is!!! As regards to the possible hex bolts , maybe a bit risky unless a lot more info on them. Before Ford changed to torx bolts on the later 2.8i , were the earlier ordinary bolts stretch type. Why change I wonder, was there a head problem? Have at members with the earlier 2.8s experiences any problems?

The change to stretch bolts was due to customers and dealers not tightening the head bolts after 500 miles or so.

That begs the question, what about the other head? I would be inclined to take the other head off. The chances are, the other gasket is on the wrong side as well.

Yeah, that occured to me to. That means more bolts and more work to a head that might be fine. Would be well pleased though if I put it all back and the other side went soon after. I will see how these bolts from America go, then make a decision, but I am erring on other head removals side.

So do you reckon that using the older type of bolts and retorquing after 500 miles is gonna be okay. Would be a lot cheaper presumably. Thanks again.

On the basis that I don't know the tensile.properties.of stretch bolts i will look at alternatives on the basis of the tighten after 500 miles method.

This company are specialists in Ford V6 engines. They may have the right bolts or be able to guide you.

Just been on to Cologne engineering. They do not sell the stretch bolts either. They reiterate what Dansta said earlier that the change to stretch bolts was because the head bolts were not being retightened by Ford dealers at the 1st service, charging Ford for doing it though. Quite a lot of work involved, including removing the rocker shaft to get to some bolts. Stretch bolts eliminated all this. They say that when they rebuild Cologne engines now, they use ordinary hex bolts and retighten as recommended by Ford. Think I’m going to send off to Rock auto for another 8 torx bolts at £23.00 a go.
