2.8 alloy cam gear

Post by Dansta »

Head gasket went so I'm rebuilding the engine. At the same time I'm going to turbo it to get more power.

Is changing the cam drive to alloy worth it? Existing gear is fine. I get the impression from previous forum posts that changing to alloy makes the engine whine. Given these don't seem to have a habit of failing, is this worthwhile?

TIA. Dan

Hi,

If it was me then I’d change it because I’ve been told that when they go, they ruin everything!
Seen as you are going to put a lot of work into your engine and adding more power, the new cam gear should last a very long time.

I’m not sure which is the best type to go for so am interested in what everyone recommends.

Thanks Pas. Research I've seen suggests steel ones are more noisy than alloy. Also that alloy or steel is advised for a big increase in power without really calibrating what a big increase is........
