Ball joint splitter
Hi to all. Enjoying the weather and the ENGLAND football team!! Can you please advise me on which size of ball joint separator I need to purchase , to release the bottom of front strut ball joint? Track rod tapped out easily but not going to try that on the bottom joint. 86 2.8i model. I would like to save the joint so not a fork type splitter. Thanks. Peter

Re: Ball joint splitter
MachineMart is my favoured supplier for the scissors type splitter. They only had one size last time I bought one.

Re: Ball joint splitter
You don’t need a ball joint splitter just hit the part that the ball joint goes into

Re: Ball joint splitter
Getting a scissor type splitter in there will be nigh on impossible unless you've taken the disc and backplate off. A couple of good, well aimed, taps with a large hammer on the eyelet the balljoint goes into should separate the joint without damaging the rubber boot.Bod9084 wrote:You don’t need a ball joint splitter just hit the part that the ball joint goes into
Re: Ball joint splitter
Have used the scissor type a few times with the back plate and disc still on, the last one I did was so seized I actually snapped the seperator though, even if you do rip the boot your local factors will have a selection that cost pennies, take the arm down and they will match it up

Re: Ball joint splitter
How I split them is get a long strong bar and lever it down over the top of
The track control arm and under the front anti roll bar use ing the long bar then try to hit it to release
It never fails ball joint splinters just rip the rubber boots
So put the front of the long bar one end under the anti roll bar
Under the rad and if you have some one to help get them to press
Down on the long bar and you hit the strut where the ball joint goes
Good luck

Re: Ball joint splitter
Ratchet strap on the antiroll bar on the TCA's takes most of the stress away and only needs one person to complete the job.
Just buy a fork splitter and some universal boots cheap as chips.

Then just get a univerisal boot kit from a carparts supplier near you.
