I have an 84 B 2.8i 5 speed, can i run it on unleaded or do i need to use an additive???

Hi Jimmy,
If you've got heads with hardened valve seats you can use unleaded without an additive.
If you've got standard heads, opinions vary on whether to use an additive with regular unleaded, or not bother with additives and use the money you will save to have your heads modified. Personally, I use regular unleaded with an additive.

I once read somewhere that all cars after sometime in '86 were fitted with hardened valve seats to accommodate unleaded fuel... Not really much help some of us though How long was the car sat on the forecourt??

As Andrew says though you can run unleaded with additive (Not sure if Andrew uses supreme with additive or standard unleaded, though I'd be curious to know) and it won't cost you much more than filling up would normally cost you anyways.

If you drive several thousand miles a year it may be worth looking at getting hardened valve seats as over time it will pay for itself in the cost of additive.

HI Danny,
As the additive I use contains an octane booster, I don't see the point of spending extra on super unleaded. I use regular unleaded with Millers VSPE+.

Here's what Burton have to say about unleaded fuel:

Essex V6 Engines
All engines are unsuitable for running on unleaded fuel.

SOHC Pinto Engines
All engines produced after 01/89 are suitable for use with unleaded fuel. For all other engines, an identification mark (adjacent to No 4 spark plug) must be present to designate suitability for unleaded. These are:
* 1.6 - M, MM or N, NN
* 1.8 - S, SS
* 2.0 - P, PP or R, RR

Cologne V6 Engines
All 2.4 and 2.9 are suitable for unleaded fuel. 2.3 and 2.8 must have the following codes stamped in the centre of the cylinder head exhaust flange to designate suitability for unleaded:
* 2.3 - B or F
* 2.8 - D or E

Very helpful, will have to add it to my list of things to do and check!

And I see what you mean about not bothering with supreme fuel if you're using additive anyways, I occasionally chuck some additive in with my fuel but have never known for sure if I should be doing it or not
