Mk3 GL Radio Query

Might sound like a slightly odd query but did GL models have speakers wired to the radio??

I was tinkering with mine at the weekend in the boot and noticed that there were no rear parcel shelf speakers as there are in my laser, and there were no spare wires there either, I checked the front of the car and there is no fader switch either so fair enough I guessed there must be no rear speakers, but there are no speakers in my front door cars either like in other models... are they hidden behind the door card? Are there any speakers anywhere anyways??

Any help would be great, thanks

Danny

The GL's of your one's age just had the standard Ford P21 M/L wave radio with one speaker in the centre of the dashboard.

IIRC that was the deal in my 79 GL back in the day as paul says, later upgraded with graphic equaliser (who remembers them :D ) & kick ass Pioneer 150W monsters cut into the parcel shelf  ......... it was 1985 8-)

I remember these. My 1.6L (Not 1.6 Litre, Model 'L'...) I cut a big hole in the Dash to fit the then compulsory 'Sashio' Radio Cassette player, then screwed a Big Kick Ass Graphic under the Ash Tray, 7 Band of course!!! Ah memories!!! I eventually Up-graded to an Audioline Head, which came with a Built IN Graphic Equaliser..... How Cool was that!!!

Luckily I had NO parcel shelf to Butcher so had big Shelf Speakers bolted down!!!

But yes, it was as said, a P21 with a single speaker!!! Cheers,

John...

Thanks for the reply guys, never knew that some models had speakers in the dash! I'll have a poke around at the weekend when I'm free, put the GL flew through the MOT without any advisories so I can start fiddling with silly things like this now!

And I'm not sure I want to sacrifice all my boot space or my tatty parcel shelf yet but I'll definitely bear John in mind when I want to open a nightclub and run it from the boot of the car!

Cheers
Danny

Had that in my Escort and it sounded ok but I also went for the audioline with the graphic equaliser I thought it was the bees knees then .
Glad to here you’re. Cappa passed its mot .

The mint, uncracked dash I've recently bought came complete with the dash speaker......
I also am guilty of hacking my new laser dash back in the 80's to fit my Audioline head unit with graphic equaliser...
Complete with big pod speakers that made the parcel shelf sag

I would be tempted to put bigger/better speakers in but the dash in that is uncracked at the moment and I might as well try and keep that one as original as possible so for now I think I'll just leave it as is... my parcel shelf isn't in the best condition either so don't want to rip it in half!

Side question, green car, brown interior, what colour would the parcel shelf have been and what colour would the carpet on said parcel shelf be....?

Cheers
Danny

I had a 1980 Capri in the early 80s with brown seats & carpet. The parcel was brown and I'm pretty sure the carpet inserts were brown also.

Hi Danny,

Sorry fella, I was wrong!!! The 1982 / 1983 GL came with a P32 Radio, MW/LW/VHF!!!! So this might have had front door speakers??? It is very hard to tell from the Magazine, but with VHF, whats the point if you only have the 1 Speaker???

Anyhow, for your enjoyment and to help you get this car period correct, please see below from one of my many saved Ford Magazines!!!
August 1982.... What a Year!!!

Back Ground info, as the info states 'As L model'....

And now the GL info....

And the GL Pics...

I hope this helps you with the project Danny. If these Pics are not clear enough, I do have some High Quality PDF's of these Pages, drop me a PM with your E'mail address and I can forward them onto you if they can help??? All the very best fella, cheers for now,

John...

That brochure is the absolute nuts!! Love that you still have that, that's proper history haha.

I'll drop you a PM with my email and would be great if I can get the HD pictures to have a look over, thanks for posting John :)

I'll have to have a look behind the dash when I get some time and see if I can find the speaker, there's definitely not any in the door unless they're behind the carpet which seems slightly unlikely...

Thanks
Danny

Haha love that Peter, looks seriously old school :)

I managed to get around to taking the dash and the radio out yesterday to see if I could figure the thing out but annoyingly I couldn't get it to come on or make any noise... Could be the speaker so will source a new re-placement (any advice on the size so it fits behind the dash would be great!) but also I noticed that there was only an earth attachment, the signal for the ariel, the speaker wire and then the only live was off the ignition with an inline fuse, and there was no permanent live feed... I thought that it was a bit odd and I got a new stereo I had lying around to test it, wouldn't come on until I put a line straight to the battery to test it and then it came on, tried it with the original radio and nothing happened still...

Any ideas on how to get the original radio to work and if I need a permanent live feed...?

Cheers!
Danny

That's how they were wired Danny, no need for permanent live as no tuning memory except for the preset buttons.

Could be an internal fuse, dry wiring joints or anything really that would stop it working. Probably best get someone in the know to look at it.

I would think the centre speaker would be a 6X4.

Back in the dark ages when I had my nearly new MK2 2.0S I replaced the standard unit with a sharp anss stereo/cassette and surface mounted speakers on the rear shelf side supports although the car wasn't even fitted with a shelf back then.
