Brake warning light on

Post by Gaz-LS »

Hi all here's a strange one on my to Malvern this morning has I was just heading into Malvern the brake warning light came on and stopped on, I checked brake fluid oil waters as I normally do before setting off this morning and all was fine. So the first thing I check is to see if I still got brakes, yes what a relief, pulled over when I could pop bonnet no leaks nothing leaking from wheel cylinders knew brake pads was ok cause all the brakes was replaced beginning of the year, so carried on light still on then temperature and fuel gauge stopped working just approaching three countries show ground indicated to turn right at lights indicators not working, pulled into show ground rev counter stops working what a nightmare, parks up checks under bonnet still no leaks checks fuses relays everything fine no bad connections no corrosion. So I has a cup of tea trying to think what it could be spoke to members in the club I'am in they all said wiring bad connection goes back to the capri starts her up brake light goes out rev counter indicators fuel and temperature gauge all working . What a mystery everything was fine on way home I just don't understand it at all. The joys of owning a capri ha, any body have any ideas what was going on?

Could possibly be a problem developing with the instrument panel circuit board or a poor earth wire to it.

In addition to what Paul has suggested, check that the multiplug in the back of the dashboard has not worked loose.

Thanks paul and Andrew for your input I will check the connections at the back of the dash. I was thinking last night and today when I pulled the capri out the garage yesterday the garage floor was very damp the roof not leaking but there's water getting in somewhere so that probably not helping things most likely the electrics were damp as well.

Hi.

Another thing to check is that the float switch in the master cylinder is still able to float.
I had one years ago that effectively was stuck in the fully down position and therefore the light came on permanently. If the master cylinder is full when you put the cap on you should see it rise if it is to work correctly.

Up date on the problems few weeks ago, everything had been working fine until last week indicators fuel temp gauge rev counter stopped working and also found later on the brake lights wasn't working. I decided to take the clocks out and make sure no loose connections on lowing lower part of dash noticed a lot of oil and even more at the top, were the pipe is connected to oil pressure gauge it wasn't loose but it's got to be coming from there I take it there's suppose to be a rubber seal in the nut? Well anyway takes the clocks out and there's lots of oil the back of dials oil was dripping everywhere, the bottom of circuit runs back of dials are caked in oil. Looks like changing clock unit?

no seal on the nut . There is a brass ring that fits over the end of the tube and when the nut is done up it crushes the brass ring onto the tube . The tube can split ( over time ) right where it goes into the ring ( called an olive ) on the engine side . Trim the end off the tube , fit a new olive (can get them at heaps of places as its a standard size 1/8 or 3/16 ). Other than that it may be the actual gauge that's leaking in which case you need to get a new (2nd hand ) one . If you have had the car for a while this probly doesn't count but it may be that the previous owner has fixed the leak but not cleaned up the mess ( as was mine ) , and if there is oil over the electrical bits it can cause a partial short or activate things that shouldn't be going at the time . You can start the car with the dash out so you can positively see the oil joint to verify the site of the leak :)

As the original poster has identified the feed to his oil gauge is spraying oil over the inside of the instrument cluster I'd guess that was probably the cuprit.

It could be a coincidence but I'd say it probably unlikely the handbrake switch could have caused the later issue with the other lights and gauges that he reported.

Well I connected oil feed to pressure gauge had the car running for 20 minutes, no splits or leaks were connected to back of gauge but oil is seeping out bottom of cluster all away along from bottom of oil pressure gauge, which is most likely causing wiring problems.
