Headlight mounting plates

In the process of stripping down my lights to overhaul the back plates etc, and have a dafty question which I need to ask incase I break the plastic turning handle to adjust the aim of the lights. does this just apparently slip off, and if so what's the best method as mine are practically welded on, or is there something I just cannot see?
