Radiator

Post by Wintersock »

Hey guys. I'm due to be replacing my radiator some point in the new future... (Asap really).

Is there any upgrades recommended?

Also quick look on eBay.. and radiator for Capri is 160.. and a escort mk2 is 120... Anyone know the difference.. or any alternative which could be any cheaper?

Thanks in advance!

Why don't you see if there is anywhere near you that re-cores existing rads? That may be a cheaper option, but not by much I would expect.

That's what they replace, they re-use the header tank, base and sides and the rest is new.

This is the one I've fitted in mine, slightly larger than standard so does a better job of keeping the car cool, and very shinny, also less than £160 :)

Paul. Rang a few places up. Best I could get was 120! For the sake of it a new one would probably be better so I'm going to go down the eBay route.. I seen one on auction last month go for 50 quid, knew I should have dropped a bid lol. :deadhorse:

The alloy one in Danny's car does look good. The only observation I would make is that if your car still has the factory plastic cowling around the fan then the rad in the picture is not fitted with the flanges to fit it. On the sides of the rad there are flanges where it mounts on to the body then a separate flange on the engine side of the rad for the cowling to bolt on to. They may charge you extra to fit this if you need it.

Here is a picture of mine

Sorry it's a bit grubby, haven't finished cleaning engine bay yet.

Thanks Paul! I don't seem to have the casing :( here's a picture of mine. Looks like they have removed it previously.

Oh and don't worry about your engine bay, take a look at mine. Lol. Ive not had time to give it a good wash yet. To busy fiddling with bits that need doing :)

Yep, your flanges are there but cowling missing. Whether it makes much difference I don't know, would probably just make the fan draw air through the rad rather than from elsewhere. And it keeps fingers off the fan in theory!

Got one of the alloy rads, not bad fit but you have to trim the top cover plate to make fit

I have removed my viscous fan on my pinto and bought an electric fan from eBay a while back. Made a alloy plate to fit where the old cowling was and mounted the fan onto that. Also added in a temperature sensor switch from maplins which is dead easy to wire up. Just mounted the unit to the alloy plate again and poked the temperature sensor in the radiator. There's an adjustment screw on the unit so I started the girl up and waited for the temperature to go up 3/4 and adjusted the screw so it switched the fan on.

Maplins 12v temperature sensor switch:

12v fan:

Works an absolute dream and cools the engine rapidly

+1 for this idea. I have one of these in my 2.0 and it's brilliant. If anything it's too efficient at cooling the engine as when we had snow the outside temperature was so low that the engine couldn't actually warm up as combined with the silly ambient temperature the radiator was keeping it too cool, but that's obviously a bit of a fluke as we rarely have weather that bad! Lol Brilliant during the hottest summer months, looks awesome under the bonnet and through the grille too, especially if you have a MK2 grille fitted. ;)

I don't have the fan cowling either on mine but the rad has the flanges Paul mentioned but I don't really feel the need to get one tbh. Engine never tends to overheat and in a funny way I actually think its great to see the fan in action

I always wondered what the flanges were for

Image20170312_162215 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

Mind you if I am doing any tinkering with the engine running just as Paul said fingers beware !! and I am lucky not to have long hair

I bought my rad from CCI as their rad was one of the few that has the expansion tank hose nipple feeding off to the right side of rad filler rather than the left as you look at it from the front. Might be a small detail to some but the hose nipple facing left means the expansion tank hose has to do a sweeping 180 degree to then feed back across the engine compartment then around and along the inner wing ( clipped in to fixings ) to the tank. I wanted to keep the expansion hose as less obvious as I could so it just feeds off to the right then down and up to the tank itself. It don't feed along the inner wing clips...which yep I know is how Ford intended... :sorry:

I think these alloy rads that are made to order you could prob ask for this hose nipple to feed off either left or right. I seen Dannys alloy rad and it does look very nice indeed :)

All the best

Nick

Hi all. Im thinking of getting one of the aluminium radiator from ebay at £134, got to be a cheaper option than recoreing my old one. Just wondering if you did get one in the end. If so what is it like?
Thanks in advance.

Mine is great, I love it!

I've had two now (first one got damaged so I had to replace it) and they now fit much better than when I got the first one, look much nicer and do a fantastic job of keeping the car cool, don't think its ever gone over half way on the thermometer even sat crawling along waiting to go into car shows in the middle of summer so I'd definitely recommend one. Especially seeing as they are only slightly more than a standard radiator.

let us know how you get on

Cheers
