Could be the starter solenoid but that would usually be a click rather than a clunk. The clunk could also signify a duff starter but also check all earthing and wiring connections around the battery, engine and on the starter itself. Is battery in good condition?

If none of these cures it take the starter out and inspect the condition of the gear and, with a small mirror and torch, check the ring gear that goes round the flywheel.

Yeah it's a new battery..not too sure how long the starter has been on. it looks a bit worse for wear

I had a similar problem on my GL, replaced the starter and problem solved, it has recently started again though so planning to check the connections on that and hope that helps solve the problem so would recommend checking all the terminals on the starter before replacing but sounds like it might need to go...

Cheers

Hi,

I've had the exact same problem with my Laser back many Years ago and my current Injection, both were the HT Lead to the starter, corroded up inside the Plastic Sheathing... I would swap this out or strip it back to see how badly corroded the wire is??? Best of luck,

John...

I've managed to solve this...was due to bad connection on the earth lead to the engine block
