Not so, according to Wikipedia.
They lost £245 on the Capri, £770 on a Suzuki SJ, £2325 on a VW T3, £85 on a Mercedes 190E, £35 on a Range Rover, £75 on a Jaguar XK8 and £3107 on an AMC Pacer. Of course, as noted previously, the real-world losses would have been much more, as the figures shown on the programme don't involve labour or workshop costs.

Andrew.
I stand corrected.....Good old Wiki :)

I know for a fact the Mk1 XR2 episode (S11 Ep1) MB drove it into the back of the camera car on the test drive, breaking the spotlight and damaging the bumper. He didn't own up too it on camera though, just made an issue of the repair cost :wank:

When he paid the owner £2000, I really hope they gave extra off camera to compensate!!

Ooops!
They should have shown that, if only to illustrate that you can come across some unexpected extra expenses.

Cuban Chrome Ep1 of 8, March 22nd on Quest. First aired 2015.

"Cuban Chrome" is the first American TV production to be filmed entirely on location in Cuba. The docuseries explores a fascinating time warp that characterizes Cuban car culture, dating to the U.S.-imposed embargo in 1960 that prohibited all American exports to the island nation except for food and medicine. As a result, thousands of vintage American vehicles can be found in Cuba, and they represent much more than just a means of transportation. The series chronicles how the A Lo Cubano Car Club -- passionate car enthusiasts, restorers, mechanics and apprentices -- go to extremes to preserve the treasured cars for future generations, and maintain the ones they already own and depend upon".

Will give it a go.

I googled it and found this comment from the sellers Dad on another car forum;
"brewer drove up the arse of the camera car while on road test pmsl!
"Its all bollox what ya see on tv, trust me they never paid 2k for it will say mike is a funny guy though, he had us in stiches all day"

Says it all :)

I've seen a few episodes and it's really good. It's amazing what those guys have to do to keep their cars on the road.
Quest is good for car shows, as they show Cuban Chrome, old WD repeats and a few other car-related programmes. Some of their other non-car shows are worth watching too. I think that Quest is a really good channel, even if spelling isn't one of the strong points........ :D

Hi Andrew,
No I haven't really watched Cuban Chrome, I saw a little of the first episode but it didn't seem like something I would be interested in.
Not a good excuse really, but somethings just don't appeal to me :?

:agree: Quest have some good programmes, I have been watching Overhaulin' Chronicles the last week or so. Chip Foose and the team do some great work, and they explain it well too. Shame about some of the American humour though :?

To be fair to the lads, they've made huge profits on some cars, including £20,200 on a Corvette. Most of the losses and the smaller profits are from the earlier series.

I agree that there is a huge difference between the early programmes and the later ones. They must have had a much smaller production budget on the early years, as all the episodes feature down-to-earth classics that the man on the street could afford.

Andrew.
Sorry to jump back to such an old post but watching those mugs who don't know what their doing with their Porsche/MR2/Alfa etc. has made me wonder if 'normal' people could really live off buying a car in that condition, repairing it themselves and selling it on again.. The fact that they turned around one of them and sold it on for £800 within five days seems pretty cushty for a week's work! Especially if the WD guys can do it too; £20k profit on that one corvette seems a treat! I would love to know the reality of it and if it could be done and it be as easy as they really make it seem...

To use your example of Gus and Will's £800 profit in five days, remember that is for two people to share between them. Then there's income tax to pay, workshop rental (not disclosed in the show) and goodness knows how many other deductions, that doesn't leave a lot....

Very good points Andrew.
And assuming you already have your own tools etc.... Some of the equipment Edd used must have been paid for by the TV company or on loan for the show, none of that is mentioned in the costs either. Also MB lunch bill would cripple any business

As with many new businesses you will be lucky to make a big profit early on.

True points, but £400 for a week's work still works out as £80 a day, and considering they are selling cars for cash I doubt they pay income tax!

But I do see your point, hence why I'd be curious to know how much one would actually stand to make from such a venture; if I had a house with a garage would you really need a workshop...? Also with the amount of tools one acquires simply from owning an old car surely that would be enough to get you going until you need specialist gear...? I have three sets of sockets and spanners along with a horde of other stuff I rarely use!

It would be interesting to know how much cash there is actually there to be had

Penguins, Pelicans and Inland Revenue have one thing in common.....They can all shove their bills up their ar*e

If you owned your own garage and you have the tools already, then if you bought the right car ie; Nothing that needed major repairs, cheap enough price, easy to get spares and at a sensible price and something you could sell on, Mk1 Ford Focus, Fiesta, Astra, Corsa C maybe......I think you could make some money.

Yes, but I think it would be better viewed as a hobby rather than a career. Forget the makebelieve timescales that you see on the show, and instead work on the car in the evenings and during the weekends over a longer perod of time. At least that way you can maintain full time employment with a regular income.

Yes Andrew that was my thought, spare time projects to make some extra cash from a hobby

IMO, Will and Gus are picking the wrong cars as they need too much work in the so called 5 day limit. The 'Classics' they buy need much more time.

I was thinking the same thing, buy a car that needs not as much work doing as these muppets keep buying (ie check the floorpan first to make sure that a car lift won't punch through the floor!!) and you might actually stand a chance but I think it would more be a weekend hobby thing rather than a full time job kind of thing, wouldn't want to risk packing my job in for it

A mate spends his spare time breaking BMW's and the odd Ford, and he does quite well out of it as he sells the parts fairly cheap through :ebay:

Hi Andy,

Only at the medal presentations. From what I remember, it was the lady owner from the show. I didn't get a chance to talk to her about the car though. Perhaps Jason or John did?

I've just watched FantomWorks for the first time. I've never bothered before as the name put me off, I assumed it was about heavily modified cars. As it turns out, it's not really about modified cars and it's a great programme. It's currently repeated on Quest.
