Anti Roll Bar Nut Seized

Post by pbar »

Absolutely rock solid seized castellated nut on the end of the anti roll bar (which passes through the track control arm)

Anyone suffered the same and found a magical way of getting it off? Got one side off with a breaker bar, difficult to get it effectively on the driver's side though, too cramped with the strut in place.

I've been swinging like a gorilla on the thing, it's quite comical really :) Shocking it off with a hammer isn't effective as it's all bouncy bouncy under there with being a suspension part obviously.

Had plenty of WD-40 soaking on it, not tried heat yet.

Thought I'd ask before I do more swinging later.

Warm it up Paul, it'll knacker the bush and smell like hell but should do the trick.

Thank you Paul, yes that's the reason why I haven't tried heat as yet, wrecking the rubber. May come to that though :)

Slice through the edge of the nut with a thin cutting disc, that usually frees the nut off.

Thanks Martin, I did consider that I might have to resort to cutting it off, will keep that in mind.

Even though these bars can vary in diameter, I assume that the thread on the end is always the same? Just checking for future reference in case I need to source new nuts.

Hi Paul,

Get yourself this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anti-Roll-Bar ... XQIBBRD~qu before you get physical and end up wrecking it all getting them off. Nice set of poly bushes and it will look good and handle slightly better :D

Good luck

Thanks Neil, I did look at those before :) Those will fit on any diameter ARB then I take it? As for the non standard, harsher ride, unoriginal, not as Ford intended poly bushes, what do you think?! :D

Probably stating the obvious, but you never know, have you got the split pin out? Does that just need drilling through just to remove the remains of a rusted one?

Hi Paul,
I think the Laser has got the 24mm anti- roll bar, the same as on the 2.8. I bought that very same item from the same seller and they are very good quality and fit fine. I found that the supplied dished washers are heavy duty and up to the job.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate it, with that being the case, I just ordered that set. Thanks also to Neil again for posting the link.

I don't think Ford used 'old' rubber ones Neil, they were always new :)

No, superflex, they are poly but unlike the cheaper options they do have a bit of give in them. If you look at the rubber bushes in new TCA's now they're really shit rubber, I always swap them for superflex when I'm fitting them.

If you ever needed to replace the bushes in the ARB mounts, you wouldn't even be able to find new rubber ones. Not unless you are lucky enough to find some NOS items.

So what you're saying Andrew, I should have kept my old rubber ones they're probably going to be worth a fortune soon

Seriously though I have been thinking of going back to rubber ones on the rear leaf springs, as I find the rear a little harsh since fitting new springs and poly bushes. Fortunately I did hang onto some rear leaf bushes :)
