1987 Laser 2.0 radio cassette removal

Post by Dave1968 »

Hi

I've searched many post on here which advise that you can remove the radio/cassette whilst removing the heater matrix access. But nothing clearly states when asked, "Do I need to take all dash, panels and fascia off just to remove the radio / cassette?"

I want to check the fuse that comes from the radio /cassette unit. Which is the easiest route to do so?

Cheers

From memory I think the fascia needs to come off, pull the control knobs off and loosen the 14mm nuts that hold the assembly in, or I think you could just unscrew the two mounting plates that attach to the dash frame itself. From below reach up behind and remove all cables (noting where they belong), the fuse should be housed in a black holder or similar that is 'built in' to the wire. (There is another fuse that is in the unit itself also) Pull the unit out of it's black retaining bracket.

However you do it, the fascia and lower panels at minimum will have to come off, it's all pretty simple though.

Just take pictures as you go. You should find it pretty self explanatory once the fascia is off.

One other thing to note is that if your fascia is still held in by spring clips, to avoid scratching up your dash surround loosen the steering column (two 13mm bolts, doesn't have to be completely off) and drop the column down an inch or two slightly, this will give you the clearance to remove the dash fascia without damaging anything.

I may be wrong, but I think that once you remove the plastic trim from the steering column and release the lower dash on the left of the steering column, you may be able to locate the fuse holder. If I remember right you may see it about half way between the ignition switch and where the ashtray is when the lower dash is fitted.

Hope this may help you.

Don't overlook this step :) You may really damage the plastic if you try to force it off without lowering the steering columnn slightly.

Also please disconnect the battery as I noticed the wires and the fuse holder on mine needed updating as age had just stated taking its time . Any problems with headunit the belt is a really easy job to do , also I have been doing a project with the headunit keeping it looking the same with Bluetooth and may have found a easy solution. More thanks to Andrew then he really knows ( got you thinking ) .
