So...if it's a restoration project, go back to standard. Problem solved.

But probably the simplest and cheapest in the long run.

Try draining and changing the fluid then bleeding the system. To do this have the front wheels jacked up and slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock. Do this 4 or 5 times at least. Power steering generally uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

If the grinding persists get someone else to turn the steering side to side (car jacked down) and see if you can identify where the noise is coming from. Strut top mounts are a good starting point. Make sure tyre pressures are blown up correctly. It is normal for PAS systems to make a grinding hissing noise on full lock.

Power steering was fitted at the factory on the last few Lasers made, probably just to get rid of leftover racks etc!

That's interesting, I was not aware of that.

OP, I hope you get the issues sorted.

Andrew.

Do you know if it is a Capri rack or something sourced and made to fit from another car ? Is it belt driven ( like a V6 Capri one) or is electric ?

It's belt driven with a dual pulley

Diagnosis should be just the same as on a V6 Capri with power steering.

Does the noise occur at any road speed and stationary. If so, does it still occur with the front of the car jacked up so the front wheels aren't touching the ground. ?

I test drove a white one a few years ago, before I bought mine. That had power steering, I always thought it must have been fitted by a previous owner. I actually saw it as a negative rather than a positive thing, as I preferred a car that was ready to drive and experience from back in the day. Perhaps it was factory then?
