Starting issue

Post by zakumwest »

Hi all,
If I could pick your knowledgeable brains please,
I have a 1986 2.8i which has always started first time, however on Monday last had to take if for an MOT and it wouldn't start,
I checked the usual suspects spark at the plugs etc. anyway I removed the cold start injector to see if fuel was getting through and yes it would was and low and behold the engine fired up, I switched of straight away then but the injector back in and the engine failed to start, I then disconnected the electrical plug to the cold start injector and again the engine started and run great, connect it and it will not My question is what is the relationship with the supply to the cold start injector and the starting sequence.
Thankyou

This may help. I would check the warm up reg first as it might be overfuelling the engine from cold and the cold start injector is working fine but by doing that is making the situation worse.

What were the mot emissions like? Was it rich while warm?

I thought the cold start was fed by the starter motor only when cranking and earths through the thermo time switch. It should not be spraying when the engine is running.

As the link in ollyw's post says there also is an impulse relay which gives a quick pulse to help starting when hot and maybe this is defective.

I don't know for sure as I've never had a 2.8i, but I would guess it's up under the right hand side of the dash in the relay bank above the bonnet release handle.

Edit;- I can't find any pictures or wiring diagrams due to the photobucket balls up, but apparantly the impulse relay was green in colour if the original one was there.

Yes, the green relay mentioned is under the dash near the bonnet release.

Don't bother with the coil it was just a bit of banter....

I think what Dave was saying is that all signs point to the fuel pump....

Stupid question - have you wired it up the right way and is it connected in the right direction to the fuel pipes.

If that's OK you may have a blockage in the pipes or the pick up on the fuel level sender in the tank may be blocked. I recently had this problem on my kit car - stale fuel had caused gunge to block the pick up.

When you fed fuel into the carb did you just tip it down the throttle body or did you connect up to the fuel inlet and fill the float chamber? The float chamber needle valve is another issue that could stop the carb filling with fuel.

I filled the float chamber...yeah the pipes are the right way...will it make a difference if the car is on a steep slope facing up
