Pinto starter motor terminals

Postby -JC- » Sun Jun 25, 2017 12:31 pm

Thought I'd replace the starter too as it's obviously been struggling. New one only has two terminals (heavy duty and spade connector) old one has those two plus a round push on one. What's the extra one for? Do I need it? Car was originally an auto if that matters and it's still the same starter from when I had the auto box on there

The 3rd one is a feed for the points to boost the power on starting iirc

Well, it worked fine with just the two wires connected. Great to have it up and running again. I'm thinking the extra wire was to do with the neutral-start inhibitor from the old auto gearbox actually. :drive:

Do all the new starters just have the two terminals then? And if so, what happens with that third wire when fitting the new starter?

Don't know if they all have. I went with a high torque one (powerlite) as my old one was struggling a bit with the higher compression. I've just got it tied up out of the way, in case I need it later!

Hmm, fair enough! I have electronic igniton with a coil that runs on 12v all the time so I wouldn't have anything to bypass anyway!

Ah, I see, thanks! Most likely then, a standard starter will be like for like.
