Metering head kit

Hi just wondering if anybody has stripped the fuel metering head and fitted the kit from eBay and had any success ?? I've bought a kit and plan to strip down refurbish it. Any tips of knowledge would be much appreciated

This guy has quite a few videos on rebuilding his Merc k-jet metering head. Worth a view for sure.

I have stripped one and my best advice would be to have a spare head just in case! It's a very fiddly business. Obviously its possible to do but I had a slight weep of fuel on my attempt and then over tightened a bolt to compensate and sheared it :( It was a spare unit though. Are you having problems of some sort?

Hi sorry for not replying wife went into labour Friday night n had a baby so been a bit busy lol.
Anyway yes been having problems for a while now just can't get my 2.8 to run properly for any length of time been at it today and changed wur that I thought was causing the problem but changed it for brand new 1 from kmi and plugged it all in and after same 5 /10 mile the Miss come back as always. It's driving me crazy next up is the metering head I do have a spare 1 but just can't believe how it runs great for 5 to 10 mile then the Miss apears and revs drop like it is struggling for fuel. I have changed every part of injection with brand new parts except the metering head that was replaced with a second hand 1. Once the Miss comes like a stutter of u turn key off turn it back on bump it away it goes again for a bit but only get away with that for about 20 mile then you need to crack a pipe realease pressure then it goes fine for 5 mile.

With regards the metering head have you checked that the central plunger is free moving as, from what you say, it sounds like it could be sticking. Take it out and give it a good clean. It should drop out under gravity if all is well.

Hi.

I've rebuilt mine recently using the kit sold on eBay.

I would suggest you check the plunger moves freely first. In fact as you lift the unit off its mounts it should be free enough to drop out (providing you've undone all the unions first. )

Another thing to check is the pressure regulator isn't stuck at the metering head. This is a spring controlled valve. The seal on mine had perished which caused difficulties starting when hot as the pressure in the system was dropping off when the engine was turned off.

This sounds like the polar opposite of the problem you're having but I wonder if it's jammed stuck in your case.

The pressure reg is found on the front right of the meter head. It is a blanking bolt with an Allen key head in the centre behind which is a spring loaded plunger with seals fitted. You will need new copper washers when refitting as the whole chamber it sits in is immersed in fuel when running. I can't remember what size they are but they are the same dia as the main fuel lines.

I would check the seals are this are good first.
I rebuilt all of my distributor but only the pressure reg seals had had it, the rest really didn't need doing and I'd suggest you resist the temptation to take the unit apart any more than you need to as it's very fiddly to get back together.

Do not clean any parts in carb cleaner. Fresh fuel is best.

Try that first then go from there.

Hi was out at her today again tried pressure Reg and it didn't make any difference and plunger moving freely

just bought this kit myself. had my car on rollers and told its running very lean. he said its prob the metering head got dirt in it. going to fit the new kit after a good clean and fit new filter and go from there.
Are the injectors easy enough to get out and test??

Bit dependant on how long they've been in there.
The o seals round them can get stuck with age. I've damaged a couple getting them out. Always clean up the ports they sit once removed and fit new o seals every time.

Theoretically though they are easy enough. From memory you'll need some weird size spanners like 7mm and 11mm

Hello.
Can I just stick my oar in here.
I am not a mega-expert or anything other than a keen home mechanic who will tackle simple stuff, but I experienced similar problems with my 2.8i years ago after it had the front end re-done. This had necessitated removing lots of injection system stuff and then putting it back after the work.
When it was all back together, it ran like a dog. Tolerable when cold (although not great by any means), but then once it had warmed up it was barely driveable - missing, spluttering, gutless.
After despairing a bit, I took it to a competent garage who sorted it without replacing anything.
I asked what was wrong with it, and was told it was "the basic settings were all out and it just needed setting up from scratch".
Bosch K-jetronic is all about the basic fuel pressure, the control pressure, the warm up regulator pressure and the balance between these that controls the fuel flow rate from the metering head in conjunction with the air flow vane. If the basic pressure settings are wrong, it doesn't work very well.

Have you checked all the pressure settings, or had these checked since any of the other components have been replaced?
If you have then fine, but if not it could save a lot of agro.

Mine loses pressure when its turned off and I was going to change the seals on the pressure regulator. Anyone know what size these seals are or where they can be bought?

Hi,
Are there any places around that can still diagnose and repair faults with an old system like the k-jetronic?
I understand that the last car to be fitted with it was the 1994 Porsche 911. I fear modern technicians may be flummoxed when presented with a car fitted with k-ket, as it is a manual system whereas modern fuel injection systems are electronically controlled.

By the way, can anyone recommend a workshop manual dedicated to the fuel injection system?

Hi, I've just joined the forum :)

I've been having similar problems with my 2.8 though I've narrowed mine down to the WUR and the pump relay not pulsing the fuel pump to prime the system from cold.

I was also chasing my tail for a long time. The WUR is usually the cause of most poor running as it assists in acceleration with the vacuum connection to richen the mixture.

I put a gauge on the main fuel feed and the WUR feed to check pressures. The main system pressure should be 78 to 80 psi.

I didn't see whereabouts you live before I started typing.. I know of 2 garages in lancs and Manchester that are great with k-tropic.

Hello again, and welcome Mr Zoff.

I might have sounded a bit trite going on about competent garages as if there's a traditional mechanical fuel injection specialist on every street corner.
But, I can recommend Rally Tec near Chelmsford in Essex. Long experienced diagnostic and tuning engineer. He's got a rolling road and all that.
I have also used Southern Carburetters. They moved to Crawley a few years ago but its the same people and they certainly knew what they were doing when I last used them.

The 2.8i Ford service supplement book contains all the info about the injection system as installed in the Capri, including the wiring diagrams of how the relays and control units are wired.
There's also a book called Bosh Fuel Injection and Engine Management by Charles Probst. It is a very detailed and comprehensive guide to all the Bosch 70s/80s Bosch injection systems including K-jet. Good bedtime reading.

Just stripped the metering unit on the 280 to replace all the seals ect all was going well until I knocked the table.
Now I can’t remember which way around the springs and cups ect fit back in.
There’s six little washes ,springs and six cups of some sort
Has any one got a diagram or could tell me which way they go.

The flat washers go in to the metering head first followed by the springs. The cups go on top of the springs, the concave side goes on the spring so the flatter surface faces out.
