what keeps halfshafts in the axle

Post by Ghia15 »

Hi all.

Bit of a noob question but been a while since I played with halfshafts.

I have just swapped to a rear disc conversion and I am not sure if there should be something more than just the bearing holding the half shaft on the axle tube.

Just tried to remove the hub from the shaft, after market parts, and the whole half shaft came out.

Should that happen without unbolting anything or should I have something more deciding everything.

Thanks

Hi,
As standard, it's just the bearing and those four small bolts in the plate that hold the halfshaft in the axle tube. Not much really, when you think about it......

As Andrew says, four small bolts. Remove the brake drum and line up one of the two holes in the half shaft with the bolts behind to undo them.
I'm hoping you removed these and forgot rather than they weren't there

Yes.

They are all there.

It was the axle went off to have a new lad unit and two piece halfshafts fitted. Then it came back and I fitted the rear disc brackets but forgot to refit the plates over the top.

They are on now and all secured with spring washers and locktite now so all good there.

Just had been a few years and like to double check before my wheel overtakes me.

Just need a handbrake cable and to make two pipes for the front and she will be ready for classic ford on Sunday.

Cannot wait to drive her.

In that case, it was lucky that you did double check.......

How long has the wait been?
I hope you have a good day at Classic Ford.

I should be in my usual spot in the grandstand. I like to take my own chair to be comfy.

Have worked the last 2 years so didn't get to see any cars running. Looking forward to some strip action now. Hotel booked, tickets printed. Game on!

Yeah, Very good job I did check her. Very costly mistake. lol

Has been about 9 months as after crap last year she came back off the road due to being pretty much undriveable.

The diff was on its last legs and would pretty much shake the car to pieces above 60mph.

New diff, New Brakes and alot of elbow grease and she is much happier.

Also the 3.09:1 diff has kept her entertaining to drive but removed the fear of it putting me into the nearest hedge. lol

Should be able to make it over.

Will have to see if the Capri passes an mot and is insured.

Still having a few issues as the diff still has a crumble, even after rebuild so going back to the company to talk to them about it.
