Can't get my steering wheel off

Post by guitarswet »

Hello folks I'm looking for suggestions. I'm trying to remove my laser's old leather steering wheel but the damned thing just wont budge. Does anyone have any miracle way of getting it off?

- we've removed and then loosely refitted the retaining nut
- tried pulling, rocking and banging hard on the wheel
- tried a puller but couldn't work out how to get it on without damage
- tried smacking the wheel with rubber hammers
- tried tapping it from the rear using a steel rod
- tried levering it from the back using long screw drivers
- tried WD40

in summary I have thumped, pulled and smacked it until I'm blue in the face but so far it shows no signs whatsoever off coming off the splines. If anyone else has any better suggestions please let me know!
Regards

Maybe some kind of modified slide hammer? I know I had to properly wrestle with mine but it came off in the end. Not nearly as bad as you seem to be having it though.

You could try spraying a little penetrating fluid onto the splines with the retaining nut off then replace the nut a few turns.
Get a wide diameter drift then tap the nut a few times and this should shock the wheel on the splines making it easier to remove.

I'm sure someone would have noticed but just in case - it doesn't have two nuts fitted instead of one does it?

Had a few stick.
Always managed by striking the wheel with both hands at the same time. Down on the left and up on the right, then the opposite
The twist and shock has always freed it off the splines for me

It seems that he's knocked himself out whilst attempting it.
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

No, I think he's decided to get us all together to decide as a committee, or maybe just a steering group? ;)

Sorry, that was 'wheely' bad.
