wiper motor assembly removal

wiper motor assembly removal
Following the steps in the Haines manual and got to the remove motor and linkage from car but can't seem to get the thing to budge. Tried trapping, wiggling, pulling and rattling from every angle I can get my hand on it and can't seem to get the thing to move and inch. Am I missing something obvious? Doesn't help that the pictures in the manual are total junk regarding this.
