hi mate, i recently had to replace screen rubber on my early mk2 and was told by tickover i had to order the mk1 rubber to fit correctly, which it did, so i doubt the mk 2 screen will fit a mk3, cheers.

The screen will fit so long as you have the MKII screen rubber to go with it.

You can fit any screen to any Capri as long as you have the correct rubber - the hole in the bodyshells is the same for all models.

So what's the diff? I ask because I have had major issues getting a screen to fit properly. The screen that came with the car fitted real good but ones fitted later all seem a tad wide. The car is a 1980 MK3 and I assume the rubber is too as I have not changed it . The windscreen company have fitted 4 or 5 different screens and they all seem to big but I (we, Inc the windscreen co guys ) had not thought the rubbers might be different. Are the MK2 or MK1 rubbers any skinnier than the MK3 rubber?. Any hints here greatly appreciated as this is one issue I have not been able to solve. The car has always been in the family from new and has never been crashed I'm pretty sure the windscreen hole is the right shape ,(it measures up ok )
Thanks

All of the screens up to the early eighties are all the same size then around 83 the screen size got smaller but the size of the rubber was increased . I have over the years fitted a MK1 screen and rubber into a later MK3 shell so I know that all of the apertures in the shells are the same.

Hi Martin,

Here is where I get confused. I have a 1984 so am presuming its the latter 'smaller' screen that you mention but checking the windscreen rubber that East Kent Trim sell as a "Mk2/3" Soild type rubber. So is this ok then with a latter Mk 3 screen ??? Below is a link to the rubber they sell. Jason actually rang them and asked if it was ok for a 84/86 capri and they said yes it was, but how come they only do one size seal for capri 2/3 ?? They dont list a seal for 'later' mk3 aftet say 1983 ?? Just confused why they only do one rubber for all. Am i making sense here ???

Here is that link. What screen would you need then with thelr seal ?? #confused.com

All the best

It's not that confusing really, the East Kent screen seal won't fit the later smaller screens and no one produces rubbers for the later screens. Your screen should be the later size but it may possibly have had an early one fitted at some time with the correct rubber.
Unless you can tell the difference in the rubbers the only way to know is to measure the screen.

No Jason.. Pilkington Glass are prob the best for Classic Car screens and they sell a screen for 1974-81 or 1981-87. From what Martin is saying we need the earlier screen to work with the east kent seal as the later screens dont. :)

My rubber still might be ok mate

Thing is Jason, whilst we both have been a bit mislead, East Kent Trim are probably not actually incorrect in saying their rubbers fit all mk2,3 inc our later ones, BUT its very misleading. We are lucky to have someone like Martin here to explain to us re the different screens/seals but if you did not know you would think a later windscreen would be fine with the East Kent rubber !! They must not know this otherwise they surely would say yep their rubbers fit an 86 Capri but with an earlier screen ! A bit misleading as said especially if you have a later screen and just want to replace the rubber but I suppose East Kent are not windscreen specialists albeit they sell rubbers.

Pilkington Glass however are experts and deffo seem the best for classic car screens and have approved stations around so I might just contact them.to see about supplying/fitting a screen for me. I can tell them what rubber I have so they can advise. If they do rubbers as well I might just go with that. Or I just buy a screen from them to suit the rubber I have and get Tickover to fit, but reckon this is a more expensive option as they will add their labour onto the price of everything.

Just done some research and Pilkington sell a screen for Mk1,2,3 (1974-81) and one for Mk3 (1981-86) so looks like the change of screen happened in 81.

When i get round to replacing my screen I will let you know how it goes but i will keep my rubber and prob get the earlier screen !!

Nope you are not alone mate. I am with you Steve. WHY ??? And dont get me started on the tailgate seals. Was chatting on fb re these and they differ too. If I have got it correct later tailgates have a small lip so as to fit a bonded glass and some earlier ones have a different tailgate without the lip so you fit the glass with an unbonded seal !! East Kent sell three seals for tailgates...unbonded, interior bonded and exterior bonded !! But for later mk3's its pretty straightforward in that its the interior bonded seal we need.....I tnink !!!!

But....I stand to be corrected on this :)

The later tailgates with bonded sreeens have the wider flange , the ones with the normal rubber seal have a narrower flange. You can fit a standard rubber into a later tailgate but you need to trim off 5mm all around the flange.

Ahh thanks very much for that info Martim. I did hear recently on fb there was a way to fit an unbonded rubber to a later tailgate but did not reslise it involved trimming the flange by 5mm. Sounds a bit fiddly does mate. The glass is the same size ?

I got a decent tailgate in the end from Noel on here recently who had one taking up space in his mums shed, and as pick up was only 40mins from me it was a great oppurtunity too good to miss . Its a very good one. No wiper motor or lock but I can fit the motor and lock from mine. No glass either as but Noel kindly supplied a spare glass with it so hopefully I can use this once its been cleaned up.The glass is deffo of the bonded type and tailgate seems to have the flange but not removed the old rubber and bits of glass attatched to it yet so not deffo but its from a 1.6LS so am guessing its the bonded flange type ?

Thanks again for your info Martin. Very helpful mate.

Cheers

Nick
