Axle internal swap?
Hi all, im looking to do something with my rear axle in my 1.6 mk3, you see ive fitted a 2.0 with a type 9 box, now my speedo and ratios are wrong, been looking for a complete 2.0 axle but having no luck.. Wondering if its possible to put 2.0 internals into a 1.6 axle? And what to change if so? If 1.6 half shafts would fit back in ect? Many thanks
Re: Axle internal swap?
In a word no, the diff is shimmed to fit the casing, the pinion is shimmed to mesh with the crownwheel..... It`s really specialised work. On the plus side, if you can change the speedo drive ratio for one with less (?) teeth, you can correct the speedo AND keep the 1.6 axle which will give you better acceleration. Otherwise, axle swap.

Re: Axle internal swap?
Ahh not what i wanted to hear.. Was just a thought. Cant find any axles near me.. Guess il just have to live with a speedo reading 100 when i change into 5th hah
Re: Axle internal swap?
No, seriously, the driven gear for the speedo just taps out of the box, you can do it in situ, and if you can get one with less teeth to compensate for the different gearing it should then read (more) correctly. Andrew 2.8 usually seems to have access to this sort of info so maybe he can advise?

I had the same problem, 1,6 axle 2,0 engine ans wrong speed dialing. I got a 1,6 speedo gear from burtons, and solved the problem.

Just seen an on screen ( heads up display )speedo thing that sits on the dash and projects an image onto the windscreen , one power wire and the thing uses gps to sense speed .....69 bucks ( about gbp35 ) ...... could solve a few issues with matching speedo to whatever engine/box/diff you have fitted
Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

Re: Axle internal swap?
As for internal swaps, yes it can be done, no it is not simply bolt in and out. It really does need to be shimmed correctly which involves a fair amount of specialised work.
It can be made alot easier and you can get close enough using Engineers blue or yellow mesh paint, but if not done before leave well alone.
Speedo drive gear change is a good easy route forward as the 1.6 axle will be far more fun so keep it.
Interstingly i don't know how to do, is there a guide as i am doing this to mines at mo whilst using a Pinto, although it is a track car so i don't care if speed indicated wrong.
Dashtop gps speedo's are good, i used to have one a few years ago and sold it. That was what i was going to do with Capri when driving it to track

Hi,bsaman001 wrote:Cheers chaps il look for a speedo drive, so do i want a 1.6 or 2.0 drive?
The 2.0 speedo drive gear has 24 teeth, the 1.6 equivalent has 22 teeth. Swapping them over would certainly make the speedo more accurate.
They might still be available from Ford. The FINIS was 6095065, but when I needed to buy one for mine, the FINIS had changed. Still, if the parts guy knows his onions, he should be able to find it on the system. Burton have them though.

All the best,

Re: Axle internal swap?
Hi again,
I'll just add that Steve is correct when he says that the speedo drive gear pops out. Simply disconnect the speedo cable from the gearbox and undo the circlip holding the drive gear in place. You should be able to see the gear in the hole, and if you're lucky, you might be able to pull it out with some needle-nose pliers, or similar. However, you'll most likely have to prise out the retaining cap on the other side of the gearbox, and tap it out from that side. Chances are you'll damage the retaining cap by removing it, so it's best to buy another before you start the job.

Re: Axle internal swap?
You can do this with your phone, I had an app called "speed hud" which did the same with a mirrored readout, you just place the phone on one of those non-clip mats up by the windscreen.Mc Tool wrote:Just seen an on screen ( heads up display )speedo thing that sits on the dash and projects an image onto the windscreen , one power wire and the thing uses gps to sense speed .....69 bucks ( about gbp35 ) ...... could solve a few issues with matching speedo to whatever engine/box/diff you have fitted
Re: Axle internal swap?
Andrew, just wondering if this was correct as I`m sure I`ve seen 23 teeth as the 1.6 part? Can you direct me to anywhere that has this info, as my speedo seems to be over-reading by more than I thought, so if I could move to another drive I could hopefully bring it more into line? (Not that any of them seem to be readily available anymore.) Thanks.Andrew 2.8i wrote:The 2.0 speedo drive gear has 24 teeth, the 1.6 equivalent has 22 teeth.

I can't remember where I read the information originally, maybe on the Burton site, but this thread confirms it (scroll down to post by Matty28i) :

I did ask in a Ford dealer a few years ago about the 23T speedo drive gear, I think some might still be available, but the FINIS numbers are now different.
Sadly, the parts are currently unavailable at Bearing kits

Re: Axle internal swap?
Why is nothing simple..... I did find another site yesterday (now lost!) which gave different ratios; The 1.6 had a 7 tooth `screw` / 23 tooth pinion; 2.0 had an 8 tooth screw to 24 tooth pinion. BOTH these ratios, AND the 22 / 24 you found, would give the required 10% reduction to allow for final drive ratios..... I`ve now taken the drive out of a spare 1.6 box & that does have 23 teeth. Apparently they used a 25 tooth pinion in some Transits - but again, no-one is showing them in stock. I`m guessing I`ll just have to keep searching ebay and hopefully a 24 or 25 tooth will turn up....eventually. Somebody must have a wrecked box from a 2.0 with a good speedo drive ????
Thanks for your help anyway.
(Shame they don`t do a GPS operated analogue clock mechanism which could be retro-fitted to a period dial.)

I can help you out with a 24T. I've got a used one that appears to be in good condition, and it's yours if you want it.

Re: Axle internal swap?
You`re joking? Really? I`d definitely want that as (assuming mine is 23) that would leave me under-reading by a couple of % which would be perfect!
