2.8 Throttle Sticky
Hi,
Just been out to put some new dehumidifiers in the car and run her up for a bit, and noticed the throttle pedal seems extremely tight/sticky.
I had the missus sit in the car and push the pedal whilst I watched the linkage. It seems to go from noting to everything, no in between.
Other than spraying some WD40 on the pedal pivot (for want or a better description) what else might cause this type of issue? If I move the linkage with my hands it feels fairly smooth and easy to control, so I'd guess it could only be the pedal or maybe the cable?
Cheers,
Matt

My guess is that the cable is sticking, make sure it's not kinked anywhere along it's length.
If not, a replacement is only £15 or so from the Capri Club, although they are currently out of stock.

Cheers Andrew.
Guess I'll give that a go.
Maybe Martin or someone has one in stock.
Thanks again.

I hope so as neither Capri Club, Tickover, Burton or any Ebay sellers have them in stock.....
What you might be able to do is undo the cable at the throttle body end and slowly drip a light oil into the outer casing while working the cable back and forth. Place a rag inside the car under the pedal to catch any drips when (if?) they make it all the way down the cable. That might help the stickiness a little.

Rock Auto have them listed at £10, you need to look under `interior.`

Good find, but it seems suspiciously cheap. Have you ordered from that company before, and are they reliable?

I don't have brand new but I do have a good selection of original cables but used.

Isn't anyone making the 2.8 throttle cables anymore?
Andrew.
Re: 2.8 Throttle Sticky
No, but I know they`ve been going for donkey`s years in USA and started a UK operation a couple of years back. Huge range. I`m sure others (on here?) have had good experiences, and the guy next door with the Impala has used them from the states with no problem. I`m sure if it`s listed as in stock then it probably is.Andrew 2.8i wrote:Good find, but it seems suspiciously cheap. Have you ordered from that company before, and are they reliable?

Thanks for that. I must be honest, I've never heard of them. A personal recommendation from somebody who really knows his onions is worth a lot.

Re: 2.8 Throttle Sticky
Are you definite its the cable?
The throttle body linkage is odd, in that it has to move 'over-centre'
It can get dirty and stick, meaning that you have to exert a lot of force to move it over the centre of its pivot and then it jumps across to fully open as the resistance stops.
Try cleaning the linkage and then giving it a light wipe with 3-in-1 or similar.
You can unbolt the link on the throttle body to clean it, this also helps to isolate exactly which bit is sticking

Re: 2.8 Throttle Sticky
Cheers everyone for your input, as always.
I'm pretty sure it's not the linkage, because as I said I can move it by hand and it feels very smooth with about the amount of resistance I would expect from the butterfly spring.
The part number listed on the RockAuto site appears to be the same as on the Burton site, but they actually out of stock - the website is not up to date.
Martin - I'll give you a call to get my hands on one of your used cables.
Thanks again,
Matt.

Re: 2.8 Throttle Sticky
Just sorting out a few niggling issues yesterday and investigated the throttle a little more (and in day light!).
I've noticed then operating the throttle the last quarter to FOT seems quite clunky, for want of a better word. I'll try and explain, please bear with me!
The cable has a spring on the side closest to the plenum, which is mounted to a metal bracket with a plastic clip. The other side of that metal bracket there's a white part then a black 'cap', followed by the rest of the cable. Mine is bolted to the strut top before going through the bulkhead.
I explain all that, which you all already know, because the black 'cap' section moves during the last quarter, or maybe even third of the throttle movement, and it's quite a jump.
There's perhaps 2 inches of movement overall in the pedal, and it's very sensitive. If I'm very careful I can accurately control the throttle all the way up to the point where the cap moves, and at that point it's slightly stiffer, and so it's kind of all or nothing after that point.
Is there any adjustment at all in any of the components, as ideally I'd like to have much more control over the throttle that what's there currently.
Also, any thoughts on the cap movement on the cable?
Thanks guys!
Matt

I have ordered one as I have the same issue as above.
Mechanic checked linkage today as I have done recently, and confirmed all good and working fine so new cable to go in.

It's great that Tickover have got the 2.8 throttle cable remanufactured. From what they say in the description, when these sell out, it sounds like it could be some time before a new batch is made.
Thanks for the heads up, Andy.
Andrew.
