1980 Capri Prices

Post by pbar »

Whilst watching an episode of Citizen Smith recently (classic 70's/early 80's sitcom starring Robert Lindsay and written by John 'Only Fools & Horses' Sullivan), in a 1980 episode entitled Prisoners, they find £5,000 of stolen money, Wolfie Smith exclaims that they can almost buy a new Capri with that. It seems an awful lot in 1980 to buy a Capri, is that what they were going for then?

Surprisingly it`s not THAT far out. I`ve got a Parkers guide from `81 and that lists; Capri 1.6l £4481; 1.6gl £4855; 2.0gl £5184; 3.0s £6220 and the Ghia 3.0 at 1100 more £7334
Which means prices were pretty flat between `81 and `84 I guess.

(isn`t Wolfie`s girlfriend (Cheryl?) now a policewoman in Eastenders???? Who`da thought it eh?

EDIT just noticed how the prices changed , more than doubling from 75 - 80. 78 - 79 increased by £1000
(!st column is new price in that year, 3 columns after are A1, good, fair.)

Just looking through this and you could get a Ferrari 308 2+2 (whatever that is) for £17534, and Pontiac only sold one model the Firebird Trans-Am - for £9900 ! A guy at work had one of them, big gold one, till it was repossessed! Used to see him cruising up Oxford Rd in this thing.... happy days!

Hi,
The Ferrari 308 GT4 is one of the least desirable Ferraris of all time, in many people's opinion.

Now you're talking! I'd have prefered it in black though...

Strangely enough I went to an American car club meet last weekend and there were a few firebirds there, really impressive, plus more mustangs than you could count. Surprising how compact they are, relatively of course  One of my favourites is an Oldsmobile which I took a picture of last year (no camera this time :( See if I can find it later....

Hi,
Does any manufacturer choose worse model names than Nissan?

In various markets there's the Silvia, Fairlady, Cedric, Gloria, Laurel, Leopard, Prince Royal, Roox, S-Cargo, Violet etc.

What about the Nissan which wasn't really a Nissan but continued the odd naming convention. Gentlemen (and ladies) I give you the cherry Europe (also the arna)...plain odd!

Back to the topic - wasn't the 2.8i £7995 at launch with extras including metallic paint & 2 tone paintwork & the usual dealer fit stuff such as zibart (or whatever it was called), mudflaps, mats etc...

Must have been nice to go & pick your brand new car. I've been lucky enough to drive quite a few cars from new (company cars) but would be different if it was something you owned & wanted!

Saying that 'my' first new car was a jag 3.0 xfs with in black with pimpy red seats which most would consider as quite a nice car!

Thanks for all the replies. That's brilliant Steve, the quote in the show was pretty accurate then. I used to enjoy looking at those Parker's guides, it's great that you have one from that time period.

Shirley (the girlfriend) isn't in Eastenders as far as I know, although I don't watch it, but I can't find a reference to it though anywhere. Her and Robert Lindsay were married in real life.

Hi,
Not according to IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0355411/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t6

She hasn't been in anything since 2007, and at 65 she'd be a retired police officer by now!

Yes, I did check later myself. Wasn`t Del Boys girlfriend in Only Fools and Horses a policewoman in Eastenders?

BTW, is it just me or does the front of that Ferrari look a bit Porschey? 928, 924 something like that?

I think we were discussing that she is currently a police woman in Eastenders. But I don't think that she is in it.
