Petrol cap

Another one for the silly list of jobs to sort out... I've only got 1 key for the petrol cap on our '81 2.8 injection. However, the cap I have is black and says "CAPRI II" on it, is quite fiddly to get off and isn't in fantastic condition.
If it's the proper thing I'll get a key cut for it, but if it's not I'd prefer to source another as the mechnism is corroded and stiff.

Should the ignition key fit the fuel cap too? It fits every other lock on the car. The ignition key has a little LED on it that lights up if you press a button much like the sort of thing you'd find on a 90's BMW. Not sure if thats original spec or not? It seems a bit too new looking for 1981 to my unexperienced eyes so I'm wondering if a newer key has been adapted for the car or something?

Thanks in advance,

Jon.

The ignition key should not fit your petrol cap. The cap has it's own individual key for that. Try some wd40 on the internal mechanism. That should hopefully sort it out if it's stiff to lock or open. :goodluck:

Hi Jon,

It is a separate key so yours is probably correct. If you can't get yours to work properly you could try one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Locking-STAIN ... 2eb5b93605. I've been thinking about getting one myself, so let us know what you think if you buy one.

All the best
Neil

As said previously, it is a different key. The `Capri II` is correct also, although they were originally just plated, so a previous owner must have painted it black?
The torch key was also a period feature, although I thought they came out after `81. I`d look after it because the last ones, NOS, are on ebay at £150 each http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-GENUINE-F ... 419ad9c256

Hi,
I agree with Steve. Get a replacement key cut for regular use and keep the torch key for special occasions. If it gets damaged it will be costly to replace...

Hi Jon,
Martin at Caprigear might have one for sale, it's worth asking. failing that, they do come up for sale every now and again on Ebay.

Apart from being stainless I think that`s pretty close to the original. Not bad at all.

Thanks for the heads up, gents. The one I have is a sort of crackle finish black plastic effort?
From what I've seen on ebay adverts they seem to be suitable for MGB's too? Which is handy as I've got plenty of MGB parts in boxes including a new petrol cap. Just need to dig it out! That'll be fun...

Cheers,

Jon.

Reviving an old thread here... Petrol cap on mine is seized solid. Key won't budge and neither will the cap... Tried WD40 down the barrel and still no movement....if I just pull the arse out of it will the cap pins give way, or will it be the filler neck that gives way?

Going to be interesting getting petrol into it otherwise.... :swear:

A old trick I was told was to remove the petrol cap with the engine running if the cap does not move also try some 3-1 oil as WD40 is a no no for locks as it attracts the dirt .
Never tried this myself

Mine was stiff recently, dabbed petrol onto mine instead and did a better job than WD40 to loosen it up so if you have a spare can may be worth a gentle dab?

Not sure what will break first though if you just yank it...
