Alternative Modern Petrol Tank?

Post by Hot_Protein »

I was wondering if anyone knows of a petrol tank from a modern fuel injected car that would fit in the space where a 2.8 tank goes. I don't want to have to source and pay the extra expense of a 2.8 injection tank when I can have a newer one with a good fuel sensor. I was about to have a look online at some pics but thought maybe someone has already done the leg work.

Don`t forget, a new sender is unlikely to be calibrated to work with the actual gauge in your dash, so unless you used the donors gauge as well, with all the faff of adapting/fitting it, you`d be no better off. TBH I`d say it was a non-starter?

To my knowledge the Capri fuel gauge reads between 73-10 Ohms. There exists the possibility there's an aftermarket tank / sender combination that sends between that range. It's more the fitment of the tank that I'm personally concerned about.

Pity these can`t be adapted, but 250ohm way out of range.

A guy on the capripower forum started producing more reliable fuel senders, I would start there first.

Thats great but for me I need a whole injection tank, pump and sender. I don't have a lot of money so I think it will be cheaper for me to buy a whole tank with everything still on, from a modern (less than 20yo) car.

I don't have clocks either so probably won't have Capri ones. I have a B5244 T3 engine from a Volvo so might use the clocks from one of those. Perhaps I could modify the original clocks with the Volvo stuff.

I haven't looked at the Volvo tank but I'm guessing it won't fit. I have looked at BMW briefly and it looks like the E32/34 tank looks the same sort of shape but would need to measure it. There are other issues I know but finding one that fits the space is the first hurdle. Some are plastic and most have baffles which is something I like the idea of.

In regards to the sender from the kit car parts place; Maybe you could mess with the components on the original gauge to read from a 250 ohm one?

I think you will need the kind of luck that a lottery winner has, to find a reaplacement part from a modern car for that to be honest. Have you contacted the usual suppliers, Martin at CapriGear for example, to see if they do in fact have a replacement available for you.
