Rear fog light switch illumination

Post by spireman »

Does anybody know the size of the bulb that illuminates the switch and where to get one from, unfortunately there isn't one in it so I can compare it with.

Hi,
Sorry Steve, but I think that's not right. It's a small capped bulb of about 3-4mm base and 1.2W output. I can't find any on Ebay at the moment though.
Andrew.

Just shows how long it is since I changed one.... Just as well you spotted.

edit: the one I`m thinking of is 4.8mm D, 18mm L , 1.2W with a wedge base. Is that not right, as other than the tiny `grain of rice` wire ended jobbies out of radio displays, I can`t think of any smaller bulbs?

Hi,
I'm pretty certain that it doesn't have a wedge base, but a capped base. I'll take one of mine out a bit later and take a photo.

Cheers Andrew a picture would help, I have looked at the bulb in the heated rear screen switch but that is totally different.

The bulbs in the HRS and Fog are, or should be, identical. What is the one you`ve got like?

Steve,
I'm sorry, I am wrong and I stand corrected. It is indeed a thin wedge, I believe they are a T5 like these;

Just took a couple of pics the top one is for the rear fog lights and the bottom one is for the heated rear window and as you can see the bulbs are different fittings. The heated rear window is a capless bulb but it looks like the other must be capped.

Hi,
It's the other way around on mine. The bottom photo is the same as my foglight switch connector.
The other one looks like the bulb I was thinking of earlier that is a tiny capped bulb. The two bulbs are definitely different on mine.

Don`t understand that. I`m certain mine are the same. Re the top picture, how does the bulb extend into the switch as it does on the bottom one? I`m sure the 2 switches are identical?
edit: if you look at these, they are identical (apart from mirror image) and surely only the 2nd type of plug will fit

Hi All,
Perhaps the switch and connector were changed sometime during the production run?
Or perhaps mine and Ian's cars have been fiddled with in the past. I'm in no doubt that your car will be exactly as it was when it left the factory, but I guess we can't be so sure.
I'll have a look at mine later on and hopefully take some photos, we'll see if we can solve this mystery.

Andrew,
The thing is, in the OP`s fog switch there WAS no bulb (hence the original question) the reason for this, I would say, was because it`s not the right plug (if you look at it, it just looks like a female plug to connect with a 3 pin socket or in this case switch; there is nothing that resembles a bulb holder + don`t forget bulb also has to connect to switch internals to illuminate when `on` [the brass strip inside the bulb aperture in switch pic]). This theory would stand were it not for the fact that your HRS is in fact a different type of bulb.... so it seems either switch may be either connector..... Where`s Martin????????

Hi,
I've just taken mine apart and the screen switch bulb holder is detachable from the switch itself. It's this that provides the other contact in the centre.
Photos to follow.....

I have solved the mystery of the bulb, both switch's do use capless bulbs, on the pic I posted of the rear fog light plug the actual bulb holder is missing that is why it doesn't extend into the switch. The bulb holder is on a single pin that plugs in.

It's funny, but I was convinced that the bulbs were different. Should have listened to Steve all along.....
