Can people give me opinions please?
Hi all
So the engine in a capri. I'm wanting to Rebuild the pinto already in as I no its a strong Engine and I also know it has all the power I need for a road car.
Been looking at a v8 tho. What are the pros and cons with one? Seen one on ebay for about 800 quid a 3.5 so i'm guessing it drinks the juice?
atm im still on the pinto as I like them.

It`s an enormous lot of work fabricating, cutting, adapting. The rover V8 (?) has probably not that much more power as standard than a 2.8 IIRC - but is alloy, so only same weight as a pinto frpm a handling point of view. But a lot of work if you`re not experienced at that type of thing. I have `some` experience of all the skills needed - but I wouldn`t dream of taking it on, if I had to I`d shove a V6 in.

Re: Can people give me opinions please?
Rebuild the pinto or buy one off ebay and rebuild that. Do it properly and you'll have an engine that will outlive the car. Pinto engines did outlive most of the capris that have died due to rusting away.
If you must change engine for power or otherwise better alternative than a v8 is the cossie v6 BOA or BOB. 200bhp+ and whilst not a bolt in to a pinto car or a 2.8 there's not that much fabrication/modification.

You want a Gardner 6lxb then, they`re bombprooof; might need to modify the bonnet though...80s kid wrote:Any engine you over Heat twice and it still keeps Going has to be good

We've just rebuilt a 6HLW funnily enough, needless to say finding parts wasn't easy! Amazing how much changes when you tip an engine on it's side....
Re: Can people give me opinions please?
I'll stick to the pinto as I knew I would but was just wondering. I am on the look out for a cheap scrap engine I can clean up and strip apart so I can see what each part is and learn about the engine. I can't learn from books I have to do something.

Re: Can people give me opinions please?
I ran a 3.9 Rover V8 in my Pop...... I'd take all the advice given regarding the work involved in swapping such an engine.
They are slightly lighter than the Pinto (20lbs I believe)
Work and running costs aside, the V8 just makes me want to do a sex wee!!

I'm happy with the pinto that gets me going enough. When I get my decent exhaust system on to it will sound like a crazed porn actress lol
Re: Can people give me opinions please?
If it's for the restoration that you're planning then what you need to do is to plan what you're aiming for as the finished result and then stick to it.
So far it's been concourse, then matt black, rebuilt pinto and now V8.
Decide exactly what you want and concentrate on achieving that, if you don't then all you'll do is waste a hell of a lot of money and end up with a car that's neither one thing or the other

Re: Can people give me opinions please?
Ive got the finished product in my head mate. I no what she will look like and sound like. This thread was just to see if the V8 engines people put in were really worth it. It seems not so i'm sticking to having my pinto rebuilt.Caprigear wrote:If it's for the restoration that you're planning then what you need to do is to plan what you're aiming for as the finished result and then stick to it.

Gonna be gloss black and ive done away with the flames atm but if i choose to have them then they will be done via wrapping so I can take it off when im in my 30s and think yeah I'm abit old for that now lol.
I was looking for parts bit by bit but since things haven't quite gone to plan im waiting till I have all the bits off then see what I can save or not. I'll then get a list together with everything I need.

And may never get finished. Good luck though Chris. And I too think you should keep the Pinto.Caprigear wrote:...all you'll do is waste a hell of a lot of money and end up with a car that's neither one thing or the other

Any self respecting MAN would have to put an 8 in there . Don't listen to all the mummy boys ........pinto .Huh! like that hasn't been done before.
Seriously .... the exhaust headers were a bitch ( SD1 manifolds next time ) , and making a cable clutch. YOU ALREADY KNOW how cool a v8 sounds , even to all the non car enthusiast dummies an 8 sound immediately means business. Its lighter than a pinto .... so no suspension mods ( other than what you were going to do anyway ) cheap , not that hard to fit , not that thirsty ( depends on the cam/carbs and your right foot ). Sludge box makes it easier still , and if you don't go power crazy the diff will hold up too ........................go on ! you know you want to. Mmmm single 3" system or dual 2" exhausts ., Oh wait ..... it doesn't matter both sound so cool

Sometimes I talk to myself ... and we both have a good laugh

Been a long while since I posted but couldn't resist chipping in to say that a Capri is a lot of fun with a V8Mc Tool wrote:Any self respecting MAN would have to put an 8 in there . Don't listen to all the mummy boys ........pinto .Huh! like that hasn't been done before.

Mine has a 3.9 litre Rover running with an Edelbrock 500 carb on Offenhauser 360 manifold with Mallory ignition.
And for those that remember it from a few years ago when it was running with a Wade RO34 supercharger
