Suitable gearbox for Ford 302 V8?

Post by Knez »

Hi!

I just scrapped all my previous Cologne V6 and Pinto ideas and decided to do a V8 conversion for the hell of it.
Im going for a Ford 289 or a 302 depending on what I can find.

The problem now is to source a suitable gearbox. I know that the V6 MT-75 can take around 350whp before it falls to pieces, and the Type-9 around 280whp.

Does the V6 Type-9 and V6 MT-75 fit the V8? What do I need to change?
Im guessing that I need to change the flywheel to a V6 flywheel and some other things perhaps.

If the V6 Type-9 fits I'm probably going to use it to begin with, just to see how much power it can take before it falls to pieces ;)

Help!

Usually a Borg Warner T-5 seems to be a decent candidate - They were fitted to Sierra Cosworths, but originally fitted to mustangs so should take the V8 grunt as well as being able to source parts easily in the UK. Will you be looking to upgrade your rear axle too?

From what I know from tests here in my town, the V6 MT-75 can take just as much beating, if not more, than the T-5. The interesting thing is the bolt pattern, depth of the bellhousing, and the length of the axle going into the gearbox.

If the T-5 is the same on the Cosworths and the V8 mustangs, then the V6 Type-9 and MT-75 should fit the V8 as well.

I just need to confirm this before I set out and buy a box :)

Im probably just going to try with the Atlas, since it can take quite alot of beating.
I have a friend with a 320hp 2.9 Turbo with the stock 2L Atlas, and it holds up just fine.

Otherwise I might go with a Ford Explorer rear axle, or a Volvo 240 axle, since they can be found everywhere for next to nothing.

Might be a bit "old hat " but the Toyota 5 speed steel cased celica box did ok behind a few stout 302's I knew of , 11 inch landcruiser clutch ,Dellow bell housing .
And whats wrong with a 3.9 efi Rover V8? , light weight side steps a few issues , good for an easy 250 neds :)

The Toyota 5-speed requires modification. I'd rather go with a ZF box from a BMW if I need to make some modifications. Im looking for something that bolts straight on the V8 without any mods ;).

The Rover V8's are hard as hell to find here in Sweden. The 302 can be found for £200 or so, fully working. Also, I would like to have as much Ford stuff as possible under the bonnet :P

200 quid is cheap for a 302 , here you'd probly have to cough up a grand at least for a runner , and I didn't realise you were in Sweden :D

I'm going 302 myself -- they show up in the states for around $250. I picked up a HO block for $50 and will do the build myself. Plan to attach a (world class) t-5 to it. Apparently they're good up to 450 hp if you're not launching it.

What's your plan for the rear end? I'd like to find something burlier then the stock but I might just stick with it until it goes belly up and replace it then. What's the most common upgrade for the rear?

When I looked into a beefier diff I was told by a notable Kiwi escort rally driver who runs a business building race cars for others , and road race car builder , that the standard diff is pretty good and that I would break axles before I broke the diff . I actually had already bought a 3 litre capri diff and upon inspection the only difference to the 2 litre diff was the ratio and the width of the drum brakes , and the top link mounts. So , I decided to give the standard diff a go , mostly seeing as how I only want a road car..................but I cant get those top links out of my head..........gotta be a good thing ..........surely :D

I have a 302 in mine (soon to be 347 stroker with 400+ hp) and I drag race it, so I went for a c4 auto with full manual valve body and big stall converter. it changes gear so hard that it steps sideways with ease during gear changes. also run an 8 inch ford diff with a mini spool in it

Im probably just going to use the stock Atlas axle.
When that falls to pieces im going to ue a Volvo 240 axle instead.

I know people who have had 650hp at the wheels and the Volvo axle managed it just fine as long as the diff was welded, so it's a cheap upgrade that works :).

I still haven't got my first question answered though.

Have anyone used a V6 Type-9 or MT-75 with a Ford V8? It should work.
I myself have used a Type-9 from a Pinto Sierra with an American "Lima" engine without any issues. It also has the T-5 mounted originally (at least when in the 80's Mustangs), still the Type-9 bolted onto it without any modifications what so ever.

Yes, there are two types of T5's. One that was used on the 4cyl Lima engines, and one that was used with the V8's (like in the 80's Mustang GT).

Im pretty sure that the T5 used with the Cosworths was the same as in the 4cyl Turbo Mustangs of the 1980's. It should have the shorter (same as 4cyl Type-9 and MT75) input shaft.

I guess i'll just buy a V6 Type-9 and try bolting it on, so we can settle this once and for all :)

Here is the web site that you need...

http://www.britishv8.org/articles/borg- ... d-tags.htm

As you can see, there are many different T5s. I'm not sure there is bell housing available
that will allow a Type 9 to be mated to a 302...
