Does it really need it?, I,m having a game fitting new plug leads .

Except if your radio gets interference!
Cos its not a heat shield, it's there to prevent electrical interference to the radio, due to the increased power as compared to a standard ignition system. Hence the reason it is earthed.
No idea how it makes it harder to fit HT leads?

No, they weren`t fitted to 4 cylinder models

im sure ive seen one on a 1.6 or 2.0 before :)

Not quite the same as

It's also to do with the spark plugs....
The older style plug didnt have resistors fitted in them.
