Musical horns?
Musical horns?
Hi all
I no these are illegal but I was thinking of keeping my original horn for the roads etc which is nice and legal but wire a musical horn up to the old engine starter button.
Would this work? Is this illegal?
I want the old cavelry charge bugle sound

Re: Musical horns?
OK 1st they are not illegal as such you can still have them on vehicles of a certain age
example my friend has a 73 spitfire with Dixie horns as the main horn perfectly legal
there is a cut off year where I am told by an MOT tester that its not legal as a main horn.
However if its wired in on a separate wiring loom leaving the original alone
and it is switched so it can be claimed for show use only then from what I am told it ain't an issue.
Those flame kits for the exhausts are illegal to use on the queens highway
also I am told is Nitrous oxide however both can be fitted to the car legally
however is advised that any gas bottle are disconnected or removed.
however single tone air horns are very legal and if E marked can be used as a main horn.

Re: Musical horns?
from MOT manual:
reason for Refusal
1.The horn control missing, insecure or not readily accessible to the driver.
Note: Inform the driver if the horn is insecure.
2.The horn:
a.inoperative
b.is not loud enough to be heard by another road user
c.is a gong, bell or siren
d.has more than one tone
Note: When operated, a two or more tone horn automatically produces a sound which alternates at regular intervals between fixed notes.
e.fitted to a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973, emits a sound which is:
not a continuous or uniform note
harsh or grating.

Re: Musical horns?
So I can stick one In as a 2nd horn and just whip it out for mot time then?
My standard horn makes a sh1t sound I'm surprised that don't come under grating lol

Re: Musical horns?
No need to remove it for MOT as long as it's separately switched.80s kid wrote:So I can stick one In as a 2nd horn and just whip it out for mot time then?

I fitted one on my lad's Mk2. As it has no fog lights there was a spare switch position in the row of 4 under the heater controls. I used a spare rear wash switch, which is spring loaded so only operates when you push it. I cleaned off the picture on it and replaced it with one of a horn, from a sheet of switch markings (available from various motor factors)

Stupidly loud train horns are where it's at, purely for scaring the shit out of people
Ratty as fuck
Re: Musical horns?
That`s exactly right!! If someone carves you up on the motorway you want something that sounds loud, harsh and angry - you don`t want to play them a little tune!ThatGuy wrote:Stupidly loud train horns are where it's at, purely for scaring the shit out of people
I`ve got triple air horns (all sounding simultaneously), they`re pretty good.

That made me laugh out loud!stevemarl wrote:If someone carves you up on the motorway you want something that sounds loud, harsh and angry - you don`t want to play them a little tune!
The tone can't be too harsh, as your quote from the MOT manual states it can fail the MOT if it's harsh or grating!
The trouble with this forum is that it needlessly costs me money! I tried out my own horn (on the car) and I now think it's too feeble. I'm going to have to buy some dual or triple airhorns now.

Re: Musical horns?
You got me thinking mate. They would work roughly the same as a car horn wouldn't they? Just how to get one. I remember my mate said he does work on a guys car who owns or works at a factory that makes trains. I wonder if one could fall out a window lolThatGuy wrote:Stupidly loud train horns are where it's at, purely for scaring the shit out of people
Re: Musical horns?
If you read the text these are just the horns, it does point out that you need an air supply from a compressor, which is not supplied. (What the 12/24v is about, who knows?)
Here`s a compressor http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRAIN-HORN-LO ... 2592b6ad43

That's a bit pricey! Would this one do for smaller horns?stevemarl wrote:Here`s a compressor http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRAIN-HORN-LO ... 2592b6ad43

Re: Musical horns?
Andrew, that`s just a pressure switch.
Re: Musical horns?
I`m guessing these horns aren`t a problem for trucks etc, which will already have air tanks for brakes, ancillaries etc, it`s another matter fitting a massive compressor into a car - just to frighten passers-by!

Re: Musical horns?
That`s the type of thing I`ve got. I`ve got 2, one in the Capri; the other has outlived 4 cars, is now 37 years old, and still works fine. Had it since I passed my test..
