Hey guys,
I'm aware of the voltage regulator causing issues but let me explain my issue.
It's a 1.6 I'm putting back together after a long restoration and a respray.
Both temp and fuel gauges are off.
Tested the temp gauge by shorting the feed wire. So gauge is working.
Tested the temp sender with a voltmeter and it's sending a signal. Around 5v after a short run and the car sitting for an hour.
The car has at least a quarter of petrol.
So I cleaned the pins on tank sender and reconnected the wires.
The gauge jumped to the top like it was shorting.
The tank was out few years so I'm hoping the float isn't stuck or something.
So I've one gauge at top and another not working.
Any advice here? I understand how to replace the regulator, but don't want to unless it's def it.
Any help would be great as I'd love to get it sorted tomorrow.

Me again,
Since I had no takers on this I went ahead and fixed the voltage regulator.
I'm still stuck with the same problem. Fuel at top and temp at bottom.
Gauge circuit looks pretty fresh too.
Anybody any ideas?

Sorry for not replying earlier....
My only suggestion would be to try swapping the 2 wires to the fuel sender, as if the wrong one is earthed it will show full?

It doesn`t `send` a signal as such, that is the voltage dropped across the resistance inside the sender - but it comes from the regulator in the dash. As the sender heats up, its resistance drops, more current flows, and the gauge rises. If you have 5v (i.e. the WHOLE voltage) across the sender, esp. when hot, that would suggest it`s open circuit & needs replacing. Can you test it (disconnected) with an ohm-meter? Should be about 200 ohms at room temp.Sonic wrote:Tested the temp sender with a voltmeter and it's sending a signal. Around 5v after a short run and the car sitting for an hour.

Hi Steve
Much appreciated. I'm at wits end.
I'm meant to be putting car back together and all I've been doing is taking it all apart.
I'll do a test tomorrow and get back.
