What do I need?

Post by 80s kid »

Hi all

What do I need to make a non standard steering wheel fit my mk3 capri?

Saw a nice wood one today at the show which I wanted but didn't no if it would fit as the hole in the centre looked rather large.

Hi,
You need a boss to fit the Ford splines which the steering wheel will bolt to. In my opinion, why bother when there are so many Ford wheels to choose from that will fit straight on?

Hi,
I would never have guessed! :)
Before you buy any aftermarket steering wheel, make sure you factor in the cost and availability of a boss as well.

I don't no anything about a boss mate, I assume that's what keeps it on the steering colum? Would I need to get a different one depending on what steering wheel I buy?

This one had a big hole in the middle, miles bigger than the wheel on the capri now.

It`s just a sort of adaptor, it`ll fit on the column & have the correct pattern of bolt holes for the new wheel

Ebay?? Do you know the maker? Otherwise you`d need to measure the diameter of the hole spacing and ask a seller.

Ok mate cheers. I have ordered one that had come off a capri. If it don't fit on what's already in my capri ill find a boss that does. The hole looks quite small tho like the one on my capri atm so you never no I may have some good luck and it just goes to plan... Yeah right

"capri boss" on ebay - it will have one of a couple of different fitments though, so hopefully it will say the type on it - usually they say what brand they're for, e.g. "Mountney" "momo" mota lita" "springalex" etc. Ignore the people saying "why bother" it's your car, do what you want! One of the first things I did was ditch the fugly grey plastic 80s steering wheel.

Why not just leave the original Capri wheel on, and have no problems :)

i agree with JC its your car do what you want to it
"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.

Definitely do what you want to do with it. I used to have the mountney steering wheel which i really liked the look of. A lot nicer than the standard wheel and went lovely with the stainless steel dash inert in my opinion.

Failing that, why not keep a lookout for a good condition original one. They are sought after, look great and will give a lot of appreciation from all quarters, much more than you would earn with any aftermarket contraption.

Have to agree, the old Mountney Wheels are very nice, I have one with alloy boss fitted in my Mk1, the original Ford RS steering wheels are very nice too but go for pretty big money.

Scout ebay for one but I think you should get one that is ready to bolt on and save yourself some grief faffing about with bosses that may or may not fit right.

Search for older muscle car wheels on ebay states site. I found this for 45usd shipped.

Had to buy the boss kit and the horn mechanism seperately but I don't remember the cost of it. Not a lot though. The steering wheel was made by Grant and I tracked down the boss kit based on that. ("Grant challenger steering wheel adapter")
