Young Driver Insurance

Post by Dezdoghound »

Hello, you may or may not have seen my other thread, but I'm 17 and passed my test at the end of September and have been thinking of getting a Capri. So far the best quote I've got is from Adrian Flux for £2180 per year with £500 excess on a 1.6 Laser. Is this a reasonable deal, or are there better ones out there?
Thanks

If you also know of any ok condition (i.e usable/MOT'd) Capris under £1500 then if you could point me their way I'd greatly appreciate it!

Sounds a lot, but I didn't get my first policy until I was 19, and that was on a 957cc fiesta 13 years ago! Not sure what the norm is these days.

My first policy was when I was 20 on a 1.4i mk6 Escort, and I was paying £2,300, before the interest for monthly payments were added. It worked out at £182 per month.

Have you shopped around with specialist insurance companies such as Adrian Flux, Quinn, Towergate Wilson etc....

Since I got a capri I've said "over the moon" a lot more than ever before.

I was only looking at this the other day, as my son is a year away from driving and he wants a 1.6 Capri as his first car- so before going straight in and buying one that we can spend some time fettling I looked at insurance in case it was going to be prohibitive.

Obviously £2k+ is a crazy sum of money - and nobody wants to be paying that for just a years worth of insurance - but in context it's actually not too bad. We looked here at the 15 cheapest cars to insure for 17 - 18 year olds

http://cars.uk.msn.com/insurance/cheape ... ds#image=2

As you can see, it actually fits in quite well - and if you have to spend that much you might as well spend it on a proper car than some euro-box that yer nan would be proud of - I know which one I'd rather have my lad running around in!

my 1.6 laser cost £2k on insurance the first year. I was 19, no no claims and had been driving about a year - That was with tesco which actually worked out a lot cheaper than the bigger names

Hi Mate,

I am 18 currently and am paying £2,600 a year for a Vauxhall Astra 2.0l. When my insurance is up for renewal soon I have been quoted £1,600 on my 2.8i Capri.

Unfortunately we are in a tough age group and it isn't looking good for us in the future. Having even just 1 year no claims helps allot.

However, £2,100 is actually really cheap for your age, vehicle and inexperience. I really recommend you go for it dude.!
Don't embarrasses yourself by saving a couple of hundred pounds and getting a corsa :s. It wont be that much cheaper anyway and you'll have more fun and girls with the Capri.

try calling footman james.

They say you have to be over 21 or 25 I think, but my mate who was 18 got insured on a mini for £500. You will need to double check the milage you will be doing though and if it's for commutting. They may have a 5000 or less mileage limit, but you never know. It's worth a shot.

Give Lancaster Insurance a try.
I'm 21 and a student and its only £400 a year to insure my 2 litre Capri as main driver fully comp. Was turned down by a lot of insurers before I tried Lancaster, £2k sounds flipping steep!

Have you tried going around and compare the quote you have with other insurance company quotes around you? I can't remember my first premium since it usually changes and yes it is definitely high if you are a new driver. This website, http://www.yepmarket.com/get-car-insurance-under-25,might be able to help you though since it says car insurance under 25.

That price doesn't sound too bad.

I know a guy who was quoted £3k for a 106 pug.

I learnt in my 2.0 and was paying £1800 6 years ago. Was £200 cheaper than a ford KA so I knew where i wanted to be.

Add your parents as named drivers but beware if they have points, claims or anything that you have to declare as it could be cheaper without them.

Best thing to do is ring round all the classic insurers, use all the comparison sites to see which site is cheaper for you and then phone the companies direct to try and negotiate for a better price.

If you get a good price then see if you can use it with another insurer to get a better deal.

Try an build up your no claims as it really does help. Paying £400 a year on a modified 3.0 using my no claims so it really does help.

Also if you are not far off a birthday then wait until you have it to insure. Once saved nearly a grand by waiting 2 weeks to be a year older.

With regards to the car, DON'T let your heart rule your head, get the best bodywork you can for the money you have. Repairing mechanicals or replacing them is relatively easy and cheap compared to sorting rot and rust out. Most big mechanical parts can be swapped in less than a day for even a beginner mechanic and there are always people to help if needed.

Look around for the best car and even ask for a capri veteran to go with you if you are unsure to check the classic rust places and help with if the car is worth it, condition and anything that might need doing that you can use to get the car for the right price.

Also avoid modified cars as you have to declare any mods to the insurance companies. If you don't and crash they will invalidate your insurance and you could be left with having to pick up all the costs yourself.

And if you say the car will be in a garage overnight then it will have to be. I had mine listed as in a garage and in the small print it basically said I wasn't covered for theft if it was not in the garage overnight. More a problem if you say it is garaged and you don't have a garage.

Be honest with the insurance as a little more spent now will save you loads should the worst happen whether it be a crash or theft.

Also go fully comp as even at 23 it is still cheaper than third party for me.

Where are you Located out of curiosity.

All the best with the hunt
