Car Cover Damage

Post by pbar »

I recently bought a car cover from Hamilton Classic. An expensive one, £176, waterproof and breathable, etc.

Had a terrible time with this company, first they sent me one that had already been used, second hand, it was dirty. When I questioned it they said that it wasn't second hand, it's just been bought by someone else then returned to swap for another one. If that isn't second hand then I don't know what is! Poor show when you pay for something brand new.

Then it turns out they sent the wrong size, they sent a Mark 1 Capri cover, explaining the guy in the warehouse didn't look at the notes properly.

Anyway, I had the cover on for just a day and a half, and it has done the damage you can see in the pics, faded the paintwork in some areas as you can see.

Anyone have any advice on what I can do, aside from re-spraying? It's in several areas on the bonnet. Seen more of this on the net, some advise to heat the area up as much as possible, and it may disappear, either using a heat gun or hair dryer. Someone said they got rid of theirs by pouring water from a kettle. I assume it is damp under the paint?

Don't want to make it worse. There is no blistering, no raised area, totally smooth to the touch, it's wierd. Good job I didn't leave the cover on for a week.

So it`s a bit like `watermarking`, where water dries on a (new) paint surface and leaves a white mark behind??? Has it been resprayed in last year or 2, as that type of thing usually only happens on paint which hasn`t fully cured? I would try leaving it 1st, then try polish, then T-Cut, then you`ll have to try p3000 or something. Absolutely know the feeling - once put a piece of towelling on a bonnet, forgetting I`d wiped some thinners on it....

Don`t do anything drastic that`ll make it worse

Thanks Steve. I have had the car for well over a year and it has not had paint in that time. Although it has had some in the past (haven't they all), as I can, at times, see slightly different shading. I did notice, that when removing the cover, there was dampness/wet in those areas, which rings true with just what you are saying. It is like this dampness was trapped between car and cover, resulting in what you can see in the pics.

Probably will polish out but I`d leave it for a day or 2 just to see if it actually fades on its own? (Pity you can`t leave it in the sun for a bit!!)

I have tried polish in a small area just to see, but it made no difference. Yes, some advice I have seen on the net about this also said to leave the car in the baking sun. Wrong time of year for that! You sure know a lot about all aspects of cars Stave. Previous to putting the cover on, I had washed the car (several days before) and polished it. I would have thought that no water would have penetrated the polish (Autoglym), it's great at not letting rain through for example. But I am wondering if the water stains are actually underneath the polish and not underneath the paint? Might try removing a small area of polish, just to see, with vinegar maybe? Like you advise though, I don't want to do anything rash.

I`d try very gently with T-Cut, just to see if it`s having any effect. No forget that - leave it for a day or 2 before doing anything!! Seem to remember that, perversely, wax can worsen this problem? It is usually with newish paint though, it`s quite a strange thing, I`d love to know what actually happens to the paint...

DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN!

If there is moisture between the colour and lacquer, it will cause it to bubble. Just leave it for a few days, then a decent coat of wax.

Or take it to your local body-shop and they'll give you a better idea!

I wouldn't but anything from Hamilton Classic after the treatment I have had from them. See my first post above, for info.

I'm relieved to say that I was able to fix this. Tried all sorts, but boiling water did the trick. In brief, I let it trickle onto the affected areas, and let it dwell there for just four or five seconds then wiped it with a microfibre cloth. As it evaporated, it took the marks/faded areas with it. Took a while, the water had to be boiling and some parts took a couple of attempts, but it's back to normal.

The car was bone dry when the cover was put on. Can't believe some of the damage that covers can cause, looking on the net. I'm just glad I was able to fix mine.

Are you sure that you are being sent brand new ones? As I mentioned in my first post, the cover they sent to me had been previously used by someone else and returned.
